ditto :: an office that makes me giddy {katie ridder office}
Monday, February 6, 2012 by {darlene}

I get so happy and nerdy about a space that is used unconventionally, beautifully, usefully, and soaks-up-every-square-inch. This Katie Ridder office design is worthy of ditto-ing! Yes, today’s ditto is one of the most exciting rooms I have seen in a while.

I originally found this picture via Pinterest {you can find it on my board Inspiration Offices and Workrooms}, and someone pinned via quintessenceblog.com, but it was not pinned from the specific post page. It is super important to give credit to the original designer, so the moral of the story? Click on the actual post before you Pin! … I am just getting into this habit myself.

Fortunately, the very kind Stacey of Quintessence got back to me with the information about this amazing little room. This GREAT space is taken from Katie Ridder’s new book, Katie Ridder Rooms. You can read a great review of this book over at Quintessence.

On to ditto one of the most brilliant little spaces I have seen in a long time!:

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK THAN YOU CAN EVEN IMAGINE:

 This is a tiny room. No. Scratch that. This is a TEENY-tiny room. But I would give my left arm to have an office like this. I think it is BRILLIANT. A room the size of a large closet is transformed into a fantastic office through brilliant interior design. How? Read on!

2.  BRILLIANT BUILT-INS.

The built-ins in this room are brilliant! First of all, when you are trying to transform a room this tiny, and make it useful, there often is not enough space for standard furniture. The solution is custom built-ins. And the built-ins in this space have so much thought invested into their design: 1. They are slender and space-saving: with just enough room on the shelves for the average book 2. They also offer storage with closed-door cabinetry at the bottom. 3. They are painted similarly to the walls, which keeps them from closing in on the small space, and 4. They go from the floor to the ceiling, which adds an amazing shape to the entire space, as well as taking full advantage of every inch.

3.  A DESK THAT FUNCTIONS LIKE A TABLE.

The  fact that this desk can serve many functional uses is also wise for a space so small. Of course, it can function as a power desk. But also!: Because of the leg design, two chairs can fit beneath the desk, making it a place to meet with clients, or a place to collaborate with a partner. And if the chairs are moved aside, it could make a functional work surface for all sorts of creating, and you can move all the way around the table un-inhibited.

4.  A WINDOW!

Maybe this is obvious, but I think people should go to ENDS of the earth to make sure that every room and space in their home has some source of natural lighting. If you have an {ever-increasingly-common} interior powder room with no window: I beg of you, install a transom window high above the door or high on the wall – even if it just leads out to the hall; if there is even a droplet of natural light in that hall, you will be amazed at what that does for your powder room! And, just like this space… even a tiny closet can be transformed into magnificence if there is sunlight!

5.  A SNUG AND COZY PLACE TO SIT AND READ.

I love the amazing sofa at the end of this office. Sitting right by the natural light, it beckons you to stay awhile! I also adore the chocolate color and the shiny gold nail heads. {I do love how snug this piece is… so perfect for settling in with a blanket. But, I would have selected a piece that was just a bit smaller, so that the lower cabinetry would be more accessible.}

6.  THAT CARPET.

I love it. Just love it {reminds me a bit of the Fieldstone Hill Logo}! And it works so well, even in this tiny space, because the rest of the room is essentially void of busyness or pattern. Even a tiny space needs a punch, and something fun and daring.

7. THOSE GIRAFFES.

Gold giraffes. Ditto. That is all.

8. SYMMETRY AND CAREFUL EDITING.

Two of my favorite design tools strike again! This room is FULL of symmetry, and VOID of excess or junk. That makes this tiny room breathable and peaceful. The perfect place to think and dream!

SO much goodness. Love anything I did not mention? or…

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-8? SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
