Be that Person
Thursday, May 28, 2015 by {darlene}

Here is a sweet, tiny little story that is worth pausing for, me thinks.

Two weeks ago, when I was having the time of my life shopping with a bestie in ATL, {Angenigma of course}…

I spotted this amaze-balls skirt in Anthropologie…

I commented that I LOVED it…

“But where would I even wear something like that?”

Angela said something that I will always remember:

“Wear it to the grocery store. Be that Person.”

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Be that Person.

This post on being GUTSY was my way of saying that same thing,

but honestly, I just love the short-and-sweet of that truth:

Be that Person.

Be that person

  • I surely hope that is you in the photo and you bought that skirt! I love this.

  • Guess I am not original because I was going to say, “I hope you bought it!”

  • Yes, yes and yes! I hope I am that person. (But not on bad hair days – then I want to be totally invisible!) We have a moral right to inspire others to up their standards, rather than be dragged down to a ‘don’t care’ level of mediocrity, which seems to be the norm nowadays. As Bette Middler sings, “It’s your duty to be beautiful…with a Marcel wave in your hair…” Look at the uproar Iris Apfel is creating. She is always beautifully groomed and dresses to please herself. That’s the best tonic around! My mom used to say that you should look good, even if you’re not feeling good – or else you are at a double disadvantage. Go be that person!

  • I haven’t seen your posts lately until today and wowsa!!! Yes!!! As much as I love interior design stuff, this has to be my favorite post!!! And I wanna be that person, even if I am in my 60s! Ha! Actually, I usually am that person because as shy as I was growing up, I pretty much found my voice later in life. So this would be me now. But thanks for reminding me. We all need these amazing reminders! Love! Love! Love!

  • This advice sounds great, but it only works if you can actually pull it off. First you have to have all the rest of the outfit that goes with that skirt. Then you have to not kill yourself as you try to navigate the grocery store wearing a long skirt and wedge heels which you would have to wear with it because otherwise you will look too short in such a long skirt. don’t slip in the puddle that you can’t see because of the full skirt or crouch down to get something on the bottom shelf and get it dirty. Then when you get home don’t trip on the skirt going up the stairs, while you are carrying the groceries in. Also how often can you wear this skirt without people thinking”why does she wear that skirt all the time”. Why? because its too memorable to be a staple in your wardrobe.

Why not be that person who wears such a skirt to the grocery store? Because you will feel ridiculous when you do and won’t ever wear it again. It will sit in your closet and you will lament over its purchase realizing that you are not that person, never have been, never will be. If you were you would already have owned skirts like this and worn it to the store.

This is not a bad thing. You are a different person, one who does not wear ballgowns to the grocery store. Instead you are practical but you dream of not being practical and having a whole other more elegant life than the one you have. You have a wonderful life just as you are. You do not need to wear ballgowns to the grocery store just because someone thinks it would be great if you did. I used to buy a lot of clothes for a life I did not lead. What I love to see is someone dressed practical but with flair and personal style. Someone who takes basics and wears them in a creative way. I’m pretty sure you already have a great personal style. The evidence is on this blog. Don’t dare to be gutsy. Dare to be yourself, practical clothes and all.

    • I think the skirt IS her because she loved it. The whole point is that she doesn’t need a special place to wear the skirt in order to feel fabulous, she can wear it wherever she goes! She will be that person that looks and feels amazing because she is loving what she is wearing and loving the way it makes her feel (bold, brave, beautiful).
And, I’m sure she can pull it off (everyone has a black tank top in their wardrobe 😉
Dare to be an encouragement, Pamela!

    • I don’t quite see this as you see it. But one thing I agree with you on for sure? If wearing practical clothes reveals the YOU that YOU love, then YES!!!: “Dare to be yourself, practical clothes and all.” For me, that would not be my personal happy place. For you – if that is where you feel like a million bucks – I applaud you at having discovered that and listening to what is true for you!!!! Best to you, Pamela, and thank you for reading, dear one.

  • i hope you bought the skirt. Live with what you Love, is what you say. You could totally rock that skirt at the grocery store. It is about letting the real you shine through and not dressing to please others. You have helped me to be bold in my decorating. All my daughters friends comment on my house. They Love my style.( which of course is because of you). My friends, not so much. Family members and friends have criticized different pieces, but it makes me SMILE every day.

  • Yes!! Sometimes I wear a hat to Walmart JUST for this very reason.

  • I literally gasped when I read this post because it is SO what I am struggling to embrace in my own life right now: http://allmimsyblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/fearless.html
Living life in full color, embracing the day….I don’t even think we realize how captivated we can be by the simplest fears until we start paying attention. I wore hot pink cowboy boots for the first time yesterday and celebrated BEING THAT PERSON! It felt beyond wonderful to this duty-driven, responsible, careful good girl. Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
