overcoming paralysis.

I dedicate this post to myself, for my 40th birthday this week.

And I am speaking to my 25 year old self, and my 30 year old self, and to my 39 and 362day year old self.

* * *

{for me}

There is only one way to climb out of a pit, my sweet, beautiful girl.

You have to step up.

Then, you have to lift your other foot, and you have to step up again.

And then, after you do that. You have to lift your other foot up, the one that you already lifted before, and lift again.

If you are really tired of living in that pit, there is only one way to get out.

You have to do the work.

If you are really tired of living with the holes in your sofa, and you feel overwhelmed with fabrics and choices and no time,  and its tough to save up the cash and impossible to make a decision, and who to call to pick up the dang sofa… there is still only one way to a beautiful sofa.

You have to do the work.

If you are tired of kids who talk back, and act ignored, and call for your attention, and just want another piece of you, there is only one way to have a beautiful relationship with them, even though you are already a loving and giving mother.

You have to do the work.

If you are tired of feeling bad, of an aching back, of stiff joints and of hating your reflection. If you are tired of having to buy a size up and you know you are letting yourself go, and there is no turning back, there is only one way to turn this around.

You have to do the work.

If you dream of writing a book, decorating a gorgeous space, inspiring others, sharing your vision, helping others find wellness, looking like a million bucks, feeling healthy, and living with laughter. If you want a meaningful connection with your family and you want peace and joy within the walls of your home, there is only one way to get there.

You have to do the work.

If you are sitting alone in your home surrounded by love yet still surrounded by loneliness. If you don’t even remember your own soul and who you were before all of this. If you think you have no friends and no connection with others. If you feel darkness, there is only one way to feel connected.

You have to do the work.

If you give and give and give and give, and never fill yourself up and ignore the person God made you to be. If you pour out your pitcher, there is only one way to fill it up.

You have to do the work.

My gorgeous, loved, talented, hurting, beautiful self …..

You have to do the work.

You can do ALL things. You are not alone.

God GAVE you the gift to create beauty with your surroundings. You have to do your part.

God GAVE you these amazing children and the time that you have with them. You have to do your part.

God MADE your body to run, and work out, and sweat and feel glory. You have to do your part.

God CREATED you to have these passions and share them. You have to do your part.

God GAVE you your friends, your family, your husband. You have to do your part.

Bit by bit, Be Better than you were before.

Just better. Not INFINITELY better. Not arrived. Not perfect. Not great.

Just better than you were before.

Be gentle to yourself. Take it one step up at a time.

this is how you overcome paralysis.

You’ve got this.

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

I am with you!! With one toddler and a 4 month old baby my adorable little humans. But this Mama needs to do the work too for myself.
Thank you Darlene!! You can do this!!

  • I love this post so very much! I think it might be my favorite blog post ever written by anyone. Happy happy happy birthday inspiring, talented and beautiful Darlene!!!!

  • Beautiful! Nothing like some transparency to bring us all back to what’s really important today. So well said, friend. Happy birthday. Sending prayers of encouragement, peace and the contentment that can only be found at His feet.

  • I am instantly inspired to try to do a little more, for myself and for those I care about. Thank you for reaching out to all of us with your honesty and sincerity.
Happy Birthday week and thank you for all the gifts you’ve given to your readers and grateful clients.

  • My 40th was Saturday, so let me say first, Happy Birthday!!! And AMEN to the rest. 🙂 Well said.

  • Darlene, Happy Birthday Week! I turn 50 (GULP!) in December and I have been grappling with this “paralysis” for 10 years. I have wasted so much time with “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve”.

Last night’s interview with Dana Perino’s and with your words today…has to motivated me to be strong as you two speak on His behalf!

Thank you so much for all your beauty and insight.

  • Happy Birthday Sweetie. Be kind to yourself when you have littles. It really lasts such a short time but it is a very messy and difficult and taxing time. But it’s so hard to do much else.

Happy Birthday Darlene – YOU ARE THE GIFT – that we all get to enjoy even if it’s only through beautiful words and pretty pictures. And remember, age is only a number so live it fully. xoxoxT

  • Happy belated birthday Darlene! I m just catching up on my blog reading and this was my favorite entry of the night. Death to the taunting unattainable ‘perfect’, embracing ‘it’s better than it was yesterday’ ..I’m with ya sister!

  • I cannot express how much you have given to me this Sunday morning. I have been in this black hole, unable to climb out, it’s like an upside down funnel, I keep slipping back down. I only live because I haven’t physically yet died.
I am not looking for any pity as I, with my Lord and Savior’s love will get out of this no matter how many times I slip back. You have given me the courage to be who I want to be, a strong smart woman and maybe a little bit more beautiful than I believe I am. Time has not been as kind as I would have liked regarding aging, and I know I’ll never be that vibrant, beautiful woman I once was, but can be one for my age now. And by all that is in me, I will. I have been so bothered by being away from God, but I know He is holding out his hand to me to take, and I have, just this morning. I thank Him for leading me to your website and I will thank you from the bottom of my heart, forever. Be happy! Gayle

  • Tiffanie Startek

Thank you for sharing this. Im honestly speechless right now.. That may be one of the most authentic posts I’ve ever read. That was written so eloquently yet completely raw if that makes sense? Thank you for sharing something so personal so selflessly

    • Why the hell is this woman up at 2:30 in the morning.
Tiffanie with an IE? Is that a joke? Her post sounds as fake as her name.
Hey Tiffanie with an IE – go to bed and sleep off whatever the hell youre on. Landlord from the trailer park said your rent is late.
