What does it mean to have a signature style?

I had some fun and I googled “signature style,” and all sorts of quizzes popped up. “Find your signature style!,” “Take this quiz to identify your design personality!,” “Discover your dominant style identity!”

Wow. What lofty promises!

{okay, so maybe I did have fun taking some of the quizzes. just saying.}

But, the truth is, I don’t really believe that knowing your signature style comes from taking a quiz and finally coming up with the words to “describe” and “summarize” your Loves.

Nope.

Knowing your Signature Style comes from several years of repeatedly choosing what you love. { <- Tweet this }

Let’s take Coco Chanel for example.

How would you describe her signature style?

words that come to mind……  Classic. Bold. Classy. Put-together. Pearls. Quilted. Tweed.

But here is the thing.

words cannot neatly and tidily describe Coco Chanel.

You have to SEE her signature style in order to fully understand her signature style. And when you SEE Coco, again and again, you see that she has a Signature.

She knew what she loved. And she wore what she loved. And she designed what she loved. And she lived with what she loved.

Again. and Again. and AGAIN.

repetition.

over years.

So. Knowing your signature style means:

1. Knowing what you love; what you truly love.

{ahem. Good thing we have already learned how to identify what we truly love!}

And

2. Choosing to surround yourself with the things you love.

And

3. Choosing these loves, again and again. Enduring and repeating.

What have you loved for years? Gravitated to for years?

Are there certain colors that you have loved for a really long time?

certain fabrics? certain finishes? certain textures? certain shapes?

Have you chosen to fill your surroundings with these things?

well. you should.

Because these very things that you love

are YOUR Signature Style.

 I would love to know what things make up YOUR signature style. Tell me more in the comments!

objects :: decorating with vintage prints {plus a special offer for FHD readers}
Wednesday, June 6, 2012 by {darlene}

I often recommend to my eDesign clients that they use vintage prints to enhance their walls. It is a practical solution, and a beautiful solution, AND an affordable solution to filling the room with gorgeous art.

Now, I am a big believer in also buying original art {like these lovelies}, but most of us are not wealthy art collectors, and we need other options to enhance our original pieces. And it is for that reason that I recommend using prints.

You can see how I used prints in the following design boards:

Adding a print collection to your home can have such a big impact. These pics show some GORGEOUS print collections that are sure to inspire:

When it came time to creating a Mood Board for my sister Tammy’s first nursery, I definitely had to throw a few cute prints in there, and glam them up with some chunky, gilded frames:

Sooo….., I was very giddy when my latest sponsor contacted me, Beth of Saturated Color, wanting to advertise with FHD AND send me a gorgeous vintage print!

Saturated Color offers the classiest collection of high quality vintage prints you could find.

My nephew will be born in the Year of the Dragon. Which is some-kinda-big-deal, so I have been told. So, I just had to get this AMAZING vintage print from Saturated Color. I matted it in navy and framed it in black. Love it! Isn’t it a stunner?????

Just LOOK at the rich, stunning colors in this print {don’t even get me started on that cute, happy dog…}:

Beth at Saturated Colors has some seriously stunning stuff, y’all. And I am so giddy.

She is giving FHD readers 20% off  of her {already great} print prices.

When you shop fill your cart with lots of happy art, just use the code “FHD20” at checkout!!

These are just a few of her A.MAZ.ING vintage prints. And all of these come from collections, so you could make a HUGE impact on one of the walls in your home, for a SONG!

For the next three days, you can order from Saturated Color using the discount code above, and fill up your walls with beautiful things.

Enjoy!!

Do you have a print series on your walls?

Which image above inspires you to get creative using prints in your home?

Pin-spiration :: Lacquered Walls. Would you?
Tuesday, June 5, 2012 by {darlene}

Let’s discuss.

I think that lacquered walls are STUNNING. AMAZING. BREATHTAKING. SHOW-STOPPING.

They also happen to be a pain in the posterior: to paint thyself or to pay for thyself. Either way… a pain. But a worthy pain?????

Most lacquering instructions come with warnings, calling you to proceed with great caution.

Would you?? Have you????

Do tell!!

Want more lacquer? Well, Miss Crazy over here happens to have an entire Pinterest board for lacquer……

Which is your favorite??

Would you lacquer a room?

ditto :: dining room that makes mauve glam
Monday, June 4, 2012 by {darlene}

I have news that may be displeasing to those who remember late 80’s bridesmaid dresses with disdain:

Mauve is back!

However, today’s Ditto may win you over. Mauve has a marvelous side, no?

{As always, I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what you would ditto, too. So, be thinking!}

{design by L’Wren Scott, via Vogue}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.   MAUVE.

It is the warmer pink side of lavender, and it plays nicely with warm and cool tones. This mauve stays classy in small doses: the smashingly beautiful curtains, the art, the dining chairs, and the ‘en masse’ roses. This picture, and this picture, have started my mauve-wheels a-turning.

2.   A HUGE ANTIQUE RUG.

Someday, I hope to Ditto this in my own home.  I truly love the look of a good quality, antique rug that fills the room. The pile is always worn-low but comfortable, the pattern is intricate, the colors are flexible. This particular rug, which pulls in warm tones and cool tones, is a stunner in my book.

3.   SIMPLE, MODERN FURNISHINGS THAT ARE STILL COMFORTABLE.

Some modern pieces have lines that are so stark, they don’t invite you to stay. That is not the case with the clean-lined chairs that encircle this table.  They are very streamlined, but still inviting. And the table, which also have very modern lines, appears comfortable and perfect for a long gathering with friends.

4.   MOLDINGS TO DIE FOR.

What is there to say about the stunning moldings in this Paris apartment? If any of us could ditto them, you’d better believe we would!

5.   THE CONTRAST OF HARD VS SOFT.

Soft curtains. Hard marble. Soft rug. Hard edged table. Soft chair cushions. Hard lacquer chair. Soft white walls. Hard black floors. Hard touches vs. soft touches: this adds so much interest to the space! Contrast that I can love. Of course, ditto.

6.   A FIREPLACE OF TREMENDOUS BEAUTY.

This fireplace is an architectural beauty of solid marble and bold proportions. Please let me know if you are planning to ditto this baby!!!

7. THAT FLOOR.

Please, oh, please don’t miss checking out that amazing, ebony chevron floor.  Ditto!!!!!!

8.   GLAM TOUCHES.

I love some wonderful high-gloss glamour, I tell ya. The glam touches in this Paris apartment are not shy: A breathtaking crystal chandelier, gilded mirrors spread throughout, decadent roses, that marble fireplace {!!!!!}, ceiling-to-floor silk drapes, and the overall grand scale of the space. Can you just imagine walking into this room to eat your dinner? The glam life is for me. Ditto, I say!

* * * * * * *

SO much goodness.

Love anything I did not mention? or…

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-8? SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
