score. haute design on craigslist.
Friday, March 30, 2012 by {darlene}

I love Craigslist. Yes, oh, yes I do.

I have a love affair with old furniture. Truth be told? I really don’t think there are many new pieces out there that have:

1. beautiful lines {ugh. the cankles on most new chairs are horrific!}

2. good quality.

In fact, if you want both of these characteristics. It seems that you need to purchase HIGH high end, designer pieces.

So, in hopes of scoring furniture with good lines and good bones, I keep the furniture section of Craigslist as my home page. And now that I am a PRO Craigslist lady, thanks to my darling friend Kelly {who is also a Master Designer}, I am really scoring some amazing stuff.  You really MUST read her post on how to become a Craigslist super ninja! Click here or on the picture below:

{via Kelly at View Along the Way}

Now. onto my score.

Do you see the pretty white console in this picture?? The lacquer Ming Table on the left? Yes. Nice little number. From designers Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams. To the tune of $870 dollars.

OR! If you have friends like Kelly, and have become a Craigslist ninja, you could happen upon THIS for $100. Same. exact. table.

And if you happen to have the PERFECT spot for it… a lonely spot that has been waiting for a very narrow vanity next to your sink…

{see more of my Fieldstone Hill bathroom here}

Well, then. SCORE, I say!!!!

Frou-frouing up this corner is low on my HUGE list of home decorating, renovation, restoration projects. But, I am hoping to style it up one of these days, and show you a gorgeous new vanity spot. Perfect for primping. Which, I tend to do a lot of….

What has your latest good score been? If you have a post about it, I would love for you to leave a link for it in the comments!

Pinspiration :: the Salmons
Thursday, March 29, 2012 by {darlene}

This Spring, salmon has made its presence known in the design world.

Last week I shared my latest design board, which has a punch color of Salmon. I love how it adds cheer to this space:

The Salmons come in a variety of tones, from pale peaches all the way to vibrant corals. They are all pinks, but with a touch or “orangeness” to them, and even a touch of “muddy orange.”

Enjoy some Pin-spiration, of this amazing color, from my board “my thing for coral, salmon and peach.And be sure to check out the gorgeous shopping at the bottom of the post, and let me know how YOU would weave Salmon into your space:

Note how, in some of the examples above {like the last one}, the designers went all out on Salmons, but in others {like the second to last one}, Salmon is simply a punch color. Let that get you thinking of how YOU would use this color in your space.

I would love to hear your thoughts on incorporating Salmon!

overcoming decorating paralysis: we need to know what we love; part 1
Tuesday, March 27, 2012 by {darlene}

Thank you so much for joining me in this series.  Your comments are so invaluable to me, as I am reading every word you write {I always do!} and thinking about what YOU have to say as I write. And there really is So much to discuss. If you hang in there, and go through the nitty-gritty of these posts, I think you will start to break free of some of the things that keep you frozen when it comes to decorating.

Have you read the first two posts in this series? In the introductory post, I shared the two main ideas we will be diving into, with the goal of breaking out of our decorating paralysis: 1. we need to know what we love, and 2. we need help. And in the first main post of the series, I actually took a step back to let you know what I really think about decorating. The comments on that post alone are worth reading!

But today, we are going to take on the first main idea toward Overcoming Decorating Paralysis:

We need to know what we Love, part one

I am not positive that everyone struggles with decorating paralysis… but my hunch is this… I bet that everyone who is honest with themselves does! Yes, even interior designers. Even the legends.

You see, there IS so much beauty in this world to admire. So much art. So many creative people who are out there creating, that we are so often caught like kids in a candy store. There are so many choices… gorgeous choices. And even within our personal limitations, there are STILL so many choices.

With blogging, and Pinterest, and magazines, and HGTV-galore… we have SO many fantastic resources that are delivered straight into our homes. Some of these images are nothing short of breathtaking. And then there are all of the great DIY projects that  give us the know-how to add nearly anything gorgeous to our homes, if we put forth that effort. And if you are like me, these images are delivered into a QUITE under-finished home. So, we see picture after picture of loveliness and we are overwhelmed. As we absorb all these gorgeous images, I think we all waffle somewhere in between inspired, discouraged, and confused. “I really THOUGHT I wanted a gold leaf chair for that spot…. until I saw that glossy red one on Nate the other day”….

And so, with all this input, many of us have decorating ADD. SO, how in the world are we to know what we love, let alone define a personal style?  We can’t seem to find any direction for defining our styles. And it leaves us paralyzed in making choices for our homes.

How on earth are we to move forward with decorating our homes, when we don’t even know what we love?

There are a few steps to finding what we love:

1. We need to start by accepting that our opinions can and will change.

2. We need to put in the work to narrow down what we love, and discover we CAN have a few definite things that define our style, and

3. We need to have confidence. If we have confidence in the things we truly love, we can even begin to move toward having a “signature look.”

As you can imagine, we can’t handle this all in one post. So, we will be visiting each of these subtopics, as we move forward toward defining the things we love. In the next three posts, we will chat about the steps to finding what we love!

I do hope you will join the discussion! I would love your input in the comments.

What prevents you from being able to define what you love?

Do you find you can find plenty of things to “like,” but have trouble knowing what you confidently “Love!” ?

ditto :: my favorite bathroom ever
Monday, March 26, 2012 by {darlene}

I am so excited about today’s ditto, because it truly is one of my most favorite rooms. I have had it in my paper files for a long time, and I still adore it as much as the first day I saw it!

The dreamiest bathroom ever: Oscar de la Renta’s bathroom, from his Punta Cana home in the Dominican Republic.

Truly. I think I could soak myself in this room until every one of my digits looked like raisins. There is so much I would ditto! Most of us cannot quite have an Oscar de la Renta bathroom… but maybe there is one or two touches that you can ditto and bring into your home??

{design Oscar de la Renta, image via Inspiration Bathrooms}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  WHITE WALLS WITH A GLOSSY BLACK DOOR AND DARK, RICH FLOORS.

Contrast. surprise, surprise. Imagine that… another room that I adore, chock full of contrast!  Ditto!

2.  THE SHINIEST EXOTIC WOOD FLOORS YOU EVER DID SEE.

I want those floors. That is all.

3.  ARCHITECTURAL TWISTS THAT ADD HEIGHT.

Check out the amazing shape of the ceiling. It certainly adds architectural interest that pulls the eye upward. Another feature that I think adds creative height to the space is the window size: these windows are certainly not standard, and they have a vertical feel that echoes the tall bead board. Also, the thick molding around the room adds height to the windows, the door, and the ceiling.

4.  BEAD BOARD ALL OVER THE PLACE.

The bead board detail in this space is simply stunning. So much for the standard half or three-quarter wall of bead boarding. Nope. Oscar covers wall and ceiling. How cool is that?  Ditto.

5.  WOODEN SHUTTERS.

Don’t miss the solid wooden shutters that fit over those amazing window. Private. Custom. Classic. Quality. Creative. Oh, sigh! Ditto.

6.  A CLASSY BAMBOO BAR CART. FOR TOWELS.

Using a bamboo bar cart in the bath, and then covering every surface with inviting, fluffy white towels?? Well, that just throws this room over the edge into amazingness. It is a simple, useful, lovely touch that looks stunning.

7. WHITE MARBLE.

I love white marble in bathrooms. I guess I always will. It seems that most of my favorite bathrooms have white marble.

8. A CLAW FOOT TUB WITH A TRAY OF AMENITIES.

I happen to love claw foot tubs, and have one here at Fieldstone Hill. They truly do offer an amazing soak!

9. A SHOWER WITH A VIEW.

Because this shower is glass on 3 sides, it sits right in the middle of the room without taking up any visual space. The eye travels right through it… and for that matter, so does light! It is genius. Now, let’s not discuss the impracticality of it. Or the fact that one might feel like they were showering in a Macy’s window display. Just let me pretend for a little bit, okay??

~~~
SO much goodness.
Love anything I did not mention? or…
WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-9? SOMETHING ELSE?
I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
