lessons in design :: How to overcome decorating paralysis

***UPDATE: to see the posts that have already been written as a part of this series, click HERE***

Today I am excited to introduce a series of posts that have been buzzing around in my mind ever since I went out to dinner with one of my dearest friends the other night.

You see, we both share a love and a passion for design, and a deep desire to make our visions for our homes come to fruition, but for both of us… our own selves are holding us back. We chatted for hours about the self-imposed struggles we face that prevent us from creating the spaces in which we know we would love to live.

In fact, we tossed out so many ideas that I really cannot begin to share them in one post. We started to realize that there was much more of a battle going on in our minds than we realized, when it came to creating a home of peace and beauty that we loved. And that battle has kept us paralyzed in one way or another.

So there you have it. This is the beginning of a series.

I will be sharing about the two main “needs” that we must have in order to move forward toward homes that we love:

1. We need to know what we love

and

2. We need help {and no, I am not talking about an interior designer OR a psychiatrist}

I will also be sharing about the actual obstacles that we face. Hah! Who knows how long this series might last!

Obstacles such as:

1. Indecision

2. Fear

3. Impatience

4. Money {it is never just “I don’t have enough.”}

5. Embracing Reality

6. Time

And oh, I could go on!

Truly, I cannot tell you how many times I have had a client tell me, “You should also have a degree in Psych! You have helped me with my decorating stumbling blocks.”  These words are such a joy to me… as my desire is to help my clients to LOVE their homes, and take a chance on beauty, no matter their obstacles. And there are certainly obstacles. Usually, the obstacle is us.

And I have news for you. I need my own psychiatrist too when it comes to decorating MY home. Why? Because this decorating stuff can be complicated. Homes are NEVER just about stuff! They are about so much more.

Okay. Are you game???

Are you ready to start overcoming your decorating obstacles and moving forward in this home of yours?????

{and}

If you have an obstacle that clearly prevents you from creating a home that you love, I would LOVE to hear about it in the comments below!

Pinspiration :: it’s a boy!
Wednesday, March 14, 2012 by {darlene}

No. not me.

My baby sister. {isn’t he cute??}

And I could’t be more excited!! Finally, I can spill the beans online… and we just found out yesterday that she is going to have one of my favorite kinds of people {okay, at the risk of offending most of my readership: they actually ARE my favorite kind.} But that is how it is with us mommas of boys….

They have pretty much stolen our hearts, and they take our hearts with ’em into the mud and dirt and tractor wheels.

And as you can imagine, I am having fun thinking up all kinds of nursery decor. And pinning away, without mercy.

To see a plethora of both boy and girl and neutral nurseries, you can hop over to my Pinterest board: Inspiration Nurseries. And for a zillion tot ideas, and fun Grow-with-You decor, check out my inspiration collection at: Inspiration Children’s Room .

But, of course, right now: around here it is all boy!!! so here are some of my favorite Boy Nursery inspiration pics:

Which one is your favorite, oh and don’t keep us in suspense… and why???

{ from the home of Trina Turk, photo Bonnie Tsang, via Matchbook}

WHAT I LOVE:

1. colorful, modern art. en masse!

2. a mid-century wall, covered in gorgeous wood.

3. gilded chairs. gilded accessories. gilded lighting. gilded anything.

4. a colorful and artful table runner.

5. that easel.

6. clean lines and straight edges, mixed with romantic chairs and vibrant splashes of color.

7. despite the haute design, those chairs look comfortable.

8. this room has been edited to only include objects that the owner loves and collects. no junk.

ditto :: soaring architecture define this foyer
Monday, March 12, 2012 by {darlene}

Feast on the gorgeousness of this dreamy, architecturally-magnificent foyer. What would you ditto?

{design by: Amy Morris, via Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  HERRINGBONE BRICK FLOORS.

Love. Adore. Don’t you love the relaxed patio feel that this welcoming brick floor adds to the space? And that killer herringbone pattern adds so much texture. Want to add this to my mudroom! I am taking note. Ditto!

2.  A VIBRANT SOFA IN THE FOYER.

White, white, everywhere. With a few contrasting kicks of brown. Oh. And then, there is that rockingly beautiful sofa!! Don’t you love how powerfully the contrast of the turquoise colored sofa pops in this room??

3.  NEUTRALS THAT ALLOW THE ARCHITECTURE TO TAKE CENTER STAGE.

I find that when you want architecture to truly stand out, neutral colors actually allow the architectural shapes to shine through. I love a good, fun, colorful built-in or architectural accent… but for architecture that has a presence all its own, I love to paint it in a creamy white or creamy, pale gray.

4.  DETAILED WOODWORKING GALORE.

The wainscoting goes beyond magnificent in its detailing in this foyer. The trim alone is stunning. Ditto.

5.  TURQUOISE VELVET.

I am pretty much thinking that I need to recover something in my home in turquoise velvet. Ditto.

6.  WOOD BUNDLES AND OTHER ODD ART.

I love the concept of taking useful, practical, daily household items and displaying them in an artful way. Do you use firewood? Well, then. Why not display it in lovely bundles in your foyer? Do you keep a watering-can on hand? Well, then. Why not buy a gorgeous copper one and keep it handy AND on display in the foyer? I love the joy of elevating practical, regular-life-items into art by buying beautiful versions of these things, and considering a beautiful way to display them.

7. A BUST.

Reminds me of the bust in Edie’s room. Or this bust of Angela’s. Seriously love these girls and their fun and personal styles.

~~~
SO much goodness. Love anything I did not mention? or…
WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-7? SOMETHING ELSE?
I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
