a room I love :: a mix-it-up library
Saturday, March 10, 2012 by {darlene}

FHD’s  “ A Room I Love” series….just a simple hello, from me to you, featuring a Room that I Love, and a quick list of why I love it. Do you love it?:

{ design: Angie Hranowsky, via Lonny Mag}

WHAT I LOVE:

1. a sofa, perfectly set back into a nook between bookshelves. I adore this look… and I would love to sit there!

2. a bold, geometric rug with calm, traditional furnishings

3. that slab o’ marble, round coffee table with brass legs. What a lady.

4. art flanked by lighting, as a focus wall

5. robin’s egg blue bookshelves

6. a capiz shell chandy, that peeks into the photo, adds a touch of not-so-serious-romance to this library

7. big, comfy pillows that play on the blue shelves {those particular pillows are not my fave however}

8. the chinoiserie, tiny table next to the sofa. It is just waiting for my coffee.

9. Velvet on sofas, with feather filled cushions. One of the most sophisticated ways to “do” a sofa.

DO YOU LOVE IT?? WHAT DO YOU LOVE?

While the gettin’s good
Thursday, March 8, 2012 by {darlene}

Today and yesterday in the Northeast, the weather has been glorious. In fact, this is what the boys are doing as I sit and chat with you:

And we have been busy as bees at Fieldstone Hill. I have been getting serious about my commitment to “DO!”

* * *

Yesterday, we started to clean up the garden, getting it ready for tilling and soon, planting of early spring treats. Like Arugula. My mouth is watering at the prospect.

We already found a few surprises: Boys found earthworms and black dirt. Of course, the spearmint has started its hostile takeover.  I found a broccoli, already growing and blooming.

* * *

And, we are not only at work outside, but inside as well. We are painting the living room, with its abundance of trim… and I am LOVING how it is looking so far. Want a sneak peak? okay!!! Golly, you all can talk me into anything!

The color is actually a bit darker than it appears in the photo. Remember the Design Board for this room? The color is Deep Secret, from Benjamin Moore’s new Color Stories line.

* * *

On top of that, I am finally making progress on an oil-painting that has been on my to-“do” list for over a year and a half!

* * *

Every day, I am learning something new about balancing The Life Worth Living, and balancing this deliciously wonderful business of Fieldstone Hill Design. Without a doubt, it is requiring daily choices and tremendous scheduling and self-control. I have to regularly remind myself that this business is mine for the adjusting. That is the joy of having it at all.

So, be warned: The gettin’ is good:

Right now, I am temporarily adjusting my Design Availability,

1. For a limited time, I have temporarily closed my wait list for Single-Question Consults and Email Consults.

2. My wait list is only temporarily open for Vision Design Boards, and I plan to close it if it fills up too much more {so get it while the gettin’s good!}.

and

3. March will be the last month, until I resurrect it in the Fall, for the FHD Monthly giveaway to win a chance at a free Single-Question Consult. Sooo, again, Get it while the gettin’s good!

Oh, and while I am chit-chatting about the Giveaway, I have added a few more ways to enter to win. One of which is following Fieldstone Hill Design on Facebook {did you know that I share extra stuff with my Facebook peeps, like my growing list of ‘beautiful things?’}

* * *

Aside from the joy of flexibility, the true joy of Fieldstone Hill Design is my clients.

I want to give a special thanks to my sweet client, Sara of August Fields. I will be sure to share her Design Board here on Fieldstone Hill Design, so that I can tell you my favorite bits and pieces. But you can see it first over at Sara’s! You will love her warm blog, filled with glimpses of a beautiful, dedicated, and growing family.

* * *

Of course, all of these happenings have taken place over the course of at least a month; or more… and every project we have started is left unfinished. Oh, except for the snuggling part. That is never neglected, or left unfinished, around here!

Lots of Do-ing around Fieldstone Hill! If you had declared a “word of the year,” how are you doing?

ditto :: an office worthy of attention
Monday, March 5, 2012 by {darlene}

I hope you are enjoying our tours around the blog-o-sphere, as we visit talented design bloggers, and hold their gorgeous spaces up to a Ditto!

Last week on her blog, the talented Emily A. Clark shared her office reveal, and this is definitely a space with a lot of “take home” lessons worthy of ditto-ing. You will just love this office!

{photos via Emily A.Clark}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE FLOOR-PLAN “BOX.”

This is actually Emily’s Dining Room. And it is right in the front of her home; right by the front door. I love the concept of repurposing rooms because I truly believe you should use EVERY single room in your home, and use it well. Your home should bend to your family’s needs, not vice versa. So, what does one do when they have a barely-used dining room, and the need for a chic office? Think outside of the the floor-plan “box,” and create an office that is so stunning, that you are proud that it graces your front entry area.

2.  CONTRAST.

Oh, here I go again. Always talking about contrast. But, truth be told… for my personal loves and tastes, I find that the most gorgeous design exists where contrast exists. Of course, Emily achieves this so well in this office: Pure white walls and trim vs. Deep bronze shelf backing. Industrial vs. Traditional. A vibrant, bright rug vs. peaceful walls vs. deep shelves. Farmhouse simplicity {that table/desk, sparse furnishings} vs. High-Gloss Glamour {gold mirror. those shelves! even orchids and a white horse}. This is a girl after my own decorating heart! Ditto!

3.  AMAZINGLY STYLIZED BOOKSHELVES.

Aren’t these shelves stylized amazingly? Take note of some of Emily’s details that are worth ditto-ing: Books that line up evenly at the edge of the shelf. Some books up, some books on their sides. Breathing room {the shelves are not crammed full. You can still see and enjoy the color behind the bookshelves}. and A few fun pieces tossed in {that horse. A trophy. Sculptural bookends. A framed photo}. For more inspiration on styling bookshelves and display, you may have fun checking out my Pinterest Board: Inspiration Display.

4.  PACK IN THE BOOKS.

I love Emily’s confession: Once her gorgeous, and large shelves were built, she discovered that she did not have quite enough books to fill the shelves the way she had envisioned. So, of course, with a vision of shelves full of colorful books, she hunted down enough books to make these shelves have an amazing library feel – both by buying used books, and taking used books off of the hands of her family and friends. I love that.

5.  THOUGHTFUL OFFICE SEATING.

Emily found a comfy linen chair as her desk chair, and then made sure that the space had enough seating to keep the room versatile. Two fun, industrial chairs are positioned on the opposite side of her desk for client meetings. But my favorite is that comfy looking armchair that sits in the corner, and faces a wall full of reading opportunities. Not to mention, it is tucked by the window… the best place for reading. Now, Emily. Don’t work too hard. Make sure you take some time to sit in that great chair by the window.

6.  ARTISTIC AND CREATIVE INSPIRATION PIECES.

If you are a creative professional, you should surround yourself with pieces that inspire. Gorgeous pieces, that get your creative juices flowing. I love the huge and colorful modern artwork that sits in the hall to the left of Emily’s seated viewpoint. I also love the rich colors of the chinoiserie influenced lamp. A fresh plant always inspires. And being surrounded by great books has always been inspiring to me. I think that must be some of Emily’s faves sitting on her desk top. Are you inspired?? Ditto.

~~~
SO much goodness. Love anything I did not mention? or…
WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-6? SOMETHING ELSE?
I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
