design board :: a dining room with soft French influences
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 by {darlene}

My latest Design Board:

My client and I had so much fun creating her living room design {which I shared 2 weeks ago}, and our goal was to create a dining room design that would work for a space that flows together and feels like one… oh, and feels elegant, pure, and a touch “French Country.” This dining room also had to work for young children, use mostly her existing furnishings, and allow for future construction projects, all while looking gorgeous and comfortable. We even took her original living room and dining room, and flipped the two rooms around!

Some of my favorite touches in this room are:

  1. The silver platters on the wall
  2. The cozy seating area in the dining room space
  3. The blend of grays, creams, and browns
  4. The round dining room table that is not-too-big; perfect for conversation
  5. The tufted ottoman

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on my latest design.

And if you are interested in design services, it would be my joy to help you create a space that you love. You may have a bit of a wait…. but you know what they say about “good things” and “wait”-ing!

ditto :: a living room with all the angles
Monday, January 30, 2012 by {darlene}

Happy Ditto Monday!

It has been a while since I took some time to explain to my readers exactly what a Ditto post is, and why it can be helpful to you in achieving beauty in your own home.

Each week, on Monday, I take a photo of a room that I think has excellent design qualities, as well as great beauty and form. I also pick a space that has much to teach as far as design tricks/lessons. Then, I “ditto” the space by sharing what details in the room make it so great, and why. And by dissecting the fabulous elements of these rooms, it feeds our inspiration so that we can successfully bring great design and great design elements into our own homes.

Fieldstone Hill has nearly 60 Ditto Posts that you can explore by clicking here.

Today, we are going to Ditto a space by Ken Fulk that combines both relaxed and elegant elements, and plays tricks with all of the room’s angles.

{Ken Fulk, via House Beautiful}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  AN UNEXPECTED FLOOR PLAN.

 The furniture in this space almost moves in a circular pattern. With chairs and a desk and tables all at an angle, the flow of the room is both original and is flexible. If you move from piece to piece, a circular shape forms. Try using groups of furnishings on the angle if you have a tricky floor plan that is not flowing any other way.

2.  WALL TO WALL RUG WITH A FUN, THROW RUG ATOP.

The warmth of wall-to-wall carpeting is so appealing, and many homes have wall-to-wall carpeting that needs some livening up. I love the trick of tossing a fun and/or trendy rug on top of the carpeting to break up the monotony and add style to the space. It also unifies a central seating area. Hide rugs or daring patterned throw rugs would be perfect choices for this use.

3.  STUNNING MOULDINGS.

The perimeter of the entire room is topped by the most gorgeous and thick crown mouldings. These add architectural interest to the space, and provide the perfect “frame” for the room. There is another fun little moulding trick in this space, not to miss: It is the thin moulding that has been added to the basic wall surrounding the fireplace. This simple touch adds texture to the fireplace wall, but also “double frames” the art, bringing further focus to the focal point of this space.

4.  LUCITE COFFEE TABLE.

If you are considering using some lucite in your space – but just want a touch, a central table, such as a coffee table, is the perfect spot. It allows for the eye to pass from one end of a room to the other, without any obstruction. That is yet another detail {in addition to the circular angles of the furnishings} that gives this particular space such an open and airy flow. In spite of the fact that is is chock full of furnishings, this room does not feel stuffed in any way.

5.  PAINTED BOOKSHELVES WITH A LOVELY COLOR ON THE BACK.

This is not a new design trick, but it is still a gorgeous and simple way to bring depth and color into your space. The backs of bookshelves are a perfect place to get adventurous with color, or to kick one of your punch colors up a notch by using a brighter or darker version. I also love this trick because it brings further attention to an architectural element in your space; if you have built-ins, they should be highlighted! I adore the sea-glass green that is used on the backs of the bookshelves in this room – and how gorgeous it looks beside the rich british khaki walls.

6.  A GORGEOUS DESK THAT DOUBLES AS AN END TABLE.

The desk that you see in the back right hand corner is not only beautiful, it is practical in so many ways. It functions as part of the circular flow of the furnishings; it functions as a useful desk area; it functions as an end table to the sofa; it functions as a place to keep a beautiful light just beside the sofa; and it functions as a great place to layer and tuck a gorgeous X-bench. I love how this desk works in this space. Ditto!

What else did you see?

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-6? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

Pinspiration :: D.I.Y. lighting roundup
Thursday, January 26, 2012 by {darlene}

You all know that I am a self-professed non-DIY-er.

All that aside, I am willing to dive into a DIY project IF:

1. I think the end result will end up looking like a high-end stylish piece, AND

2. The project is simple {or at least worth any effort needed!}

In that spirit, I am amassing an awesome collection of DIY projects on my Pinterest board: DIY’s worth doing.

Today, I thought I would share with you a roundup of DIY lighting projects and inspiration. To get to the DIY instructions: Click on the link beneath each picture, and that will take you to the Pin. Once on the Pin, click on the link in the upper right hand, or click right on the picture, and it will take you to the original post on the project.

Lighting can be so expensive: especially if you love haute couture pieces. These DIY lighting projects may just be worth doing.

I hope you are inspired!

{If you are making one, do you want to make one for me??}

If you didn’t see my post from yesterday, I would love it if you could take my poll! Thank you!
