decorating yourself :: a poll, your thoughts, and what I wore
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 by {darlene}

I love beautiful interiors. beautiful fabrics. beautiful colors. and I love sharing my interiors inspiration.

and those of you who follow me on Pinterest know that I also happen to have “a little thing” for fashion.

One of my personal favorite boards is called Decorating Myself. Fashion is a fun past-time for me. I truly enjoy it… the way a little girl enjoys digging through her grandmother’s jewelry box.

All this to say, I am itching to start sharing a bit of fashion goodness here at Fieldstone Hill.

Just a smidge. Just a skosh.

But first, I gotta know: Are you with me? {don’t miss the poll at the end of this post, mkay? thank you!}

Because fabrics, colors, style….. they are so much fun, whether decorating your home, or decorating yourself. And images like this inspire me to add touches of beauty to my life, big and small. {Oh, and orange, of course}

{Givenchy}

So today will be a first at Fieldstone Hill.

I have been inspired by my sweet friend Emily to join in the fun, and I am going to share my first What I Wore post! In a “What I Wore” Post, You will get a glimpse of what I wore during the week … and maybe even a glimpse of my messy closet and fun and crazy life. Oh, and because I love you, I will spare you the pics of pajama days {I mentioned that I homeschool, right? Somedays I am in PJ’s until 12:30. at least. Hate me.}.

What I wore this week:

pink ruffle cotton blouse: T.J. Maxx. Pixie pants: J.Crew. Boots: vintage red leather from Etsy. Cow belt: really, really old banana republic. Sweater: no idea… maybe had it since high school? Necklace: Jezebel from Tara Lyn Evans at Etsy.

Mustard jacket: Nordstrom Rack {$9.99 baby!}. Pixie Pants: J.Crew. Boots: Frye, from Neiman Marcus Last Call. Belt: Anthropologie. Indigo shirt: T.J. Maxx. Necklace: TaraLynEvans.com.

The same as above, but without the jacket.

necklace and shirt detail. Messy side bun: Dreaming of rocking it like Yvonne.

Fuzzy, soft, shirt-dress thing: T.J. Maxx. Yoga Pants: Victoria’s Secret. Delicious cashmere socks: Christmas gift from my hubby!

I am linking up to the ultimate bloggy outfit party {plus over at my friend Ginger’s}:

lessons in design :: add a touch of equestrian
Tuesday, January 24, 2012 by {darlene}

I am totally in love with the look of equestrian, especially for the home.

Bringing the equestrian look into our lives is a part of our rich history. The equestrian influence in the home is now a part of Iconic America, made everlasting by the likes of Bill Blass and Ralph Lauren.

{Bill Blass’s New Preston Court Home}

Horse Country Style also happens to be in my own heritage. I grew up very close to this place. And yes, indeedy, I can decifer the scent difference between equine manure and other less sophisticated smells {smile}.  These beautiful creatures are an art of creation… and you can take the girl out of Northwestern Jersey, but you can’t take the Horse Country out of the girl. This is the farmhouse-simplicity that runs in my veins.

{a regular scene in my childhood: This is a horse farm in my hometown, NJ}

There are definitely elements of equine in my home, and I keep my eyes open for ways to add more. Here is a list of equine elements that would add the sophisticated touch of Horse Country to your home.

Equine Elements for your Home:

1. silver trophies {en masse}
2. plaid
3. brown leather
4. a set of riding or mucking boots, sitting in the foyer. Especially en masse.
5. horse riding equipment: leather straps, bits, etc.
6. art with equestrian themes or hunting themes.
7. antique velvet riding hats
8. old, beat up, well loved, oriental rugs
9. a roaring fire. The real kind.
10. pegs by the door
11. fox-hunting bugles
12. horse fencing
13. a no-nonsense elegance, with a touch of sparsity
14. equestrian ribbon displays
15. Rustic farm tables
16. Pumpkin pine, antique, wide-board flooring
17. Painted paneling

Feast on these gorgeous pics, and let a touch of sophisticated equestrian filter into your home:

Are you inspired? Dreaming up ways to add a touch of horse-country into your home? Which equestrian influences do you love? Do tell!

ditto :: that dining room that is one of my faves
Monday, January 23, 2012 by {darlene}

This is not the first time I have shared this dining room, and it is not the first time I have shared the fabulous designer Garrow Kedigian. But, of course, I was giddy to see that both the designer I love, and the dining room of his that I love, were featured in the December issue of Elle Decor.

It is time to revisit this gorgeous space, break all of its loveliness apart, and ditto it!

{downtown loft, Garrow Kedigian}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

  1. A STUNNING, ATTENTION GETTING, PAINTING THAT BRINGS A SPLASH OF COLOR. The moody, and bold, and larger-than-life oil painting in this room adds so much Wow factor that it elevates this room from beautiful into memorable. Would you dare to ditto by adding such a bold and grand piece of art to your space? It is certainly inspiring me to do JUST that in my living room. Need to build up the nerve for such a grand painting? Maybe start an Art Inspiration Board on Pinterest!
  2. DINING CHAIRS WITH CLASSIC FORM AND GEOMETRIC FABRIC.  You know how I love contrast!! And, how I think farmhouse simplicity is made even more amazing with some high-gloss glamour added. Well, these ditto-worthy dining room chairs are right in line with this decorating philosophy. Classic lines. Classic wood. Gutsy fabric. Bold Pattern. Simplicity and Glamour. Ditto!
  3. ART FLANKED BY ART. A huge piece of art is flanked by a set of two smaller, and more subtle, pieces of art. I love how this works in this space: adding both vertical and horizontal depth and interest to the room.
  4. SYMMETRY, SYMMETRY. EVERYWHERE.  I love symmetry. It makes my heart sing. I cannot tell a lie. Everywhere you look in this room, you can see fantastic examples of symmetry. The art. The white chairs. The end chairs. The lamps. But you know what else I love? The fact that the table’s floral centerpiece sits off center. Now how fun and lovely is that?
  5. UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS AT THE END OF YOUR DINING TABLE.  These chairs add pure grandeur to this dining space. The fabric option at the dinner table adds comfort and warmth – a great place to settle in for a great meal. Not to mention shiny, silver, high-gloss glamour.
  6. SHINY, DARK WOOD FLOORS. Considering refinishing your wood floors? Take a look at these beautiful, dark beauties. I love the contrast of light and dark together. And the pale walls and dark floors give an overall contrast, creating immediate decor vitality.
  7. EDIT. EDIT. EDIT.  This may just be my decorating word for 2012. {I have another word for 2012 to help shape the rest of my year… but why not add a decorating one as well?!}

WEIGH IN.

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-7? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

Pin-spiration :: gorgeous color combos for your home
Friday, January 20, 2012 by {darlene}

There are still several months left before green starts to pop, and crocuses arrive, and color bursts forth. I do love the melancholy quiet gray of winter, the soft whites, and the sculptures of trees.

Yet, still. Am I the only one who is ready for some color?

Enjoy feasting on these beautiful rooms, and their amazing color combinations. Be inspired; have some guts; try something new!
