ditto :: a living room for the modern equestrian
Monday, October 31, 2011 by {darlene}

I hope that you are having a wonderful Monday.

I am feeling refreshed in every way after 3 days of learning and growing with some of the most talented, giving, loving, brilliant women I have ever met. Last Thursday-Saturday, The Relevant Conference 2011 was held in Harrisburg, PA, and blogging women from all over the United States gathered to put First things First and to blossom in their talents. To say that I had a glorious time does not even begin to do justice to this gathering. {and yes! pictures will be coming soon}.

Despite a snow storm across the country, no internet {I am using hubby’s phone to get an internet signal}, and 3 nights without sleep {yay for grown-up-girl slumber parties}, I am bound and determined to do our favorite Monday thing together, as always!

{Besides, I can’t push our ditto out to Tuesday, because I have a SUPER exciting Giveaway happening tomorrow. It may involve free design services…….}

Time for a ditto!!

This week’s space can be found here. And be sure to share! I would love to hear what you would ditto from this space:

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

  1. that horse. of course.  I love, love all things equestrian. {post coming soon-ish!} This amazing art piece is practically sculptural and 3-dimentional in it’s presence. He is gutsy. strong. beautiful. center-stage. Add a piece like this to your space and you have instant wow-factor.
  2. mongolian lamb pillows. I am really in the mood for mongolian lamb pillows lately! Instant fabulous.
  3. orbs . A driftwood orb and a golden piece of spherical art work perfectly together. I love how they introduce the circle shape into a room that is primarily straight lines and rectangles. That is a fantastic interior design “brush-stroke.”
  4. touches of industrial. The coffee table with metal and castors. The side table trunk edged in nail heads. The mercury glass lamp. The armchair with nail head trim.
  5. whites of many kinds. This room has the entire palette of whites that move from white to cream to sand to linen to beige and even browns. I love this soothing color palette.
  6. real life, useful objects as art. This is one of my favorite decorating tools. I love compiling objects that have a practical purpose, and then displaying them as art. Even if their practicality was more useful in years long gone, they still have additional beauty in their former usefulness. In this space, there are several examples: the mini telescope, the dumb-bell weight, the black lantern, stacked pillows under the coffee table, and the beautifully draped throw.
  7. less is more. This room is actually quite “bare” if you think about it. There are only a few accessories, and the room has clean lines present every where you turn. This “less is more” feeling is one I often try to ditto in my spaces. Restraint gives us room to breathe, and it allows life {which is busy and messy and cluttered and full from a life that is fully lived} to fill in the blanks.

WEIGH IN. SO, WHAT WOULD YOU {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE??

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO, 1-7? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

{and I will see you tomorrow for a very fun giveaway!}

must have :: a book that reminds you to love your home
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 by {darlene}

If you have read Fieldstone Hill for any amount of time, you may have figured out that I think we should set the bar high for the amount of beauty we add to our homes.

I believe we should surround ourselves with much beauty….. not necessarily things {sometimes!}, but always beauty.

I believe we should weed out the junk, and give away the unused.

and for my own home, I dream of creating gorgeous rooms and flowing spaces, filled with comfort and style.

Yes. I dream.

But I also have a reality.

And if your reality-home does not quite match up with your dream-home, be encouraged. You don’t have to wallow in seemingly unattainable dreams until you are shaken out of it. You can have a change of heart, and your home will be more beautiful for it, today!

More and more, each day, it is my daily aim to be fully present in my beautiful reality, and not waste it away wishing things were otherwise. I don’t always reach that aim, but I know where to look to get there. I continue to run the race set before me. And fortunately, I don’t have to go at it alone. I also have friends. Good friends who remind me.

One of these friends that has encouraged me along the way to love my home in the present is Melissa Michaels of the amazing blog, The Inspired Room.

And, guess what? Melissa wrote a book! I just think that is so wonderful {you know how much I love it when women go for their dreams without quitting}!!

Yesterday, I had the joy of curling up with her hot-off-the-e-presses eBook. I practically shouted “Yes!” to every single word of wisdom that she shared. And you will too, goodness knows!

{click here to learn more about this book, and to purchase your eCopy}

Hmm. Does that title remind you of anything? I just about fell off my seat when I read it, knowing that this was a book meant for me!

I soaked in every word, and let it minister to my spirit and to my home. By the end of reading the book, my home was more beautiful. What other book can do that?

I was honored to write an endorsement of “Not a DIY Diva:”

“Melissa, with her warm and empathetic voice in NOT a DIY Diva, invites us to take a look at the reality of living authentically as a means to free us from our self-created snares of home beautification. She speaks with a wisdom and candor that immediately allows you to take a deep breath and start enjoying your home and your family TODAY. If you find yourself stuck in the cycle of wanting “more” for your home, but you keep running into “but, if only’s…,” you will find freedom by reading this book; A freedom that will ultimately lead to a more beautiful home.”

{darlene}, founder of the Fieldstone Hill blog and interior designer at Fieldstone Hill Design

So, if you are thinking you need a psychiatrist to help you sort through all of your home-perfection-angst, skip the $300/hr. bill and spend $3.99 instead, okay? You will be so glad that you have added this to your “bookshelf,” and to your life.
