ditto :: an amazing library; part two
Monday, October 24, 2011 by {darlene}

Today’s ditto post is part two of two posts I have done on this {awesome} room. I had two pictures of this space, from two different angles, and it was far too gorgeous to lump both pictures together. Far too ditto-worthy! You can read Part One of this ditto room {you really must see it!} by clicking here.

Enjoy dissecting this room {featured in Chicago Home and Garden}, and discovering what you would like to ditto from this space. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

  1. those chairs, oh, those chairs.  Directors chairs with chrome and wood would be enough to make my heart go pitter patter… but then upholster them in a comfy, cozy orange suede?? These chairs are deeee-vine, and very, very ditto-worthy.
  2. the must-have sitting nook. I really adore the concept of a sitting nook that fits snugly into a recessed window area, and includes two chairs, good lighting, and a table. Everything you need for a good book and good company. If I could, I would add a sitting nook to every single room; they invite you to stay a while.
  3. orange as a punch color. Those orange bookshelves! Those orange chairs! I’ve told you how much I love each one of these design elements, but it is worthy to note how fantastic they are together! Orange becomes a classy and vibrant punch color for this library, and it adds such gorgeousness to this room. It is not hard  to convince me to use orange as a punch color; it has just the right amount of warmth, guts, life, and joie de vivre!
  4. shed a little light on your bookshelves. I love the addition of good lighting right in front of bookshelves. Here, the bookshelves have recessed lighting mounted above them, and angled in to offer the perfect light. But my favorite lighting above book cases are mounted portrait lights, en masse, above each bookshelf column. They are a simple, but powerfully classy touch. Not to mention, practical.
  5. a modern, round table with an airy feel. I am not sure if you have noticed how much I love furnishings that have legs that allow for air to pass beneath them. I believe that it lends a delicate openness to your space; the flow of air from piece to piece keeps a room from feeling heavy or stifling. The round, white, vintage table that sits in this reading corner is a classic piece that also has a lot of “air-flow” beneath it. So, even though the shape of the table is modern and strong-in-presence, the overall feel is still light and free. Love.
  6. painting the windows to match the walls. This is a trick that gives a room such polish. The gray-blue color of the walls are so dramatic, but the drama is kicked up a notch when even the window frames and muntins are painted the same color. A gutsy move that can be easily ditto-ed.
  7. fresh plants, of course. There are so many pops of color, art, drama, boldness and crispness in this room. Even so, the soft elements of nature are still right at home, bringing balance to this space. A room, no matter how gorgeous, could always use a touch of the living. Ditto-ing the use of wonderful plants and bouquets is always called-for.
  8. the rug, the colors, the walls, the restraint, the bold pieces. There is so much more to say about this space. And wouldn’t you know it: I went on and on about this room last week.. so to read more, click here.

Weigh in. So, what would you {steal} from this space??

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO, 1-8? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

objects :: recycled wood
Thursday, October 20, 2011 by {darlene}

Recycled-wood art is the perfect addition to a home that is craving for a touch of rustic, a touch of real, and a touch of earthiness. It is an amazing layer of texture that adds instant warmth to a room. It is just a brush-stroke of age and imperfection that adds nothing but character.

I love the use of old recycled wood in these projects {below}, and how beautifully they would contrast with even the glam. It is just the perfect touch of farmhouse simplicity, don’t you agree?? {find the source for all of these pics on this Pinterest Inspiration Board}

{this stunning, recycled-wood table takes my breath away; and I’m guessing it’s a DIY!}

{a very cool dresser made from recycled wood}

{an amazing wall, made fully of random, mixed, recycled wood. be still.}

{a recycled wood floating staircase. amazing}

{a modern table made of painted wood pallets. brilliant!}

{an open bookshelf, made from recycled wood. simple and classy.}

Are you loving recycled wood yet?

Oh good. Because I am hoping I got you in the mood to shop. Why so overt? Well, because I happen to be passionate about supporting women who are following their passions and creating beautiful things. So there.

And today, I want to share my super kind, super lovely, super creative sponsor with you: Jennifer of The Finest Kind of Life,

…and her super cool, super inspiring, super classic reclaimed & recycled wood artwhich you can find here or by clicking over on her pretty lil’ button in my sidebar.

Jennifer, in all her super-ness, sent me the very piece that stole my heart when I first saw her gorgeous art. It reads: “It is well with my soul.” And for those of you who may not know the AWESOME hymn that this comes from – or have forgotten the words, you simply must go and read the words {just don’t get too weepy for shopping, okay? okay.}.

The wood is such sturdy quality, finely crafted, and it came all ready to hang.Doesn’t it look perfect in Fieldstone Hill? It is right near the front door:

I know you will love Jennifer, her talent and her sweet spirit. {tell her I said “Hi,” okay?}

I would love to see a picture of where YOU add a touch of rustic, reclaimed wood to your space!  Where do you dream of using reclaimed wood? Perhaps it will be beside a touch a glam….

design in progress :: our school room; the beginnings
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 by {darlene}

Who knows exactly how long ago it was that I shared that here, that at Fieldstone Hill, we are plugging away on two rooms right now; the boys’ room and the school room. For me, it helps me to keep the focus on just one or two rooms… or I get distracted, and spend too much money :).

We are creating a fun boys’ room, where we have moved both of our guys in together {they LOVE it, by the way. And I thought it would cause sleeping problems; instead, it helped some of our sleeping problems. yay!}. And as a result of moving our oldest in with the youngest, we finally freed up a room for a homeschool room/office for me.

Just as I advise my clients, I am working from a vision for both of these rooms. Here is the post where I shared my original vision for the boys room. Much has changed since this post {the beauty of a Vision Design Board}, but that is for another day.

Now, for the school room, I am working without a Vision Design Board  {cobbler’s kids have no shoes, you know.}, but certainly NOT without a Vision. In this post, I shared a ton of rooms that captured my vision for our daily schooling space; Such gorgeous, inspiring spaces. I have been using these pics, as well as the amassed inspiration from this Pinterest Board, to create a mental vision for myself from which I have been working.

So what is my vision? My vision is to create a very minimal, open space with plenty of storage for all the paperwork and games and school miscellany we collect. And, contrary to the feeling in many schools and school rooms, I wanted a pale, neutral space that would be calming and serve as a “blank slate” for the mind. This is the very beginning execution of that vision:

– pale vanilla walls.

– warm amber silk curtains – cut to size.

– a vintage black board {the old ones don’t make chalk squeak, people!}.

– vintage Heywood Wakefield school chairs.

– a {partially paited – ahem.} very antique German table that has been passed down in the family.

– the closet has been cleared and is ready for books and all-manner-of-mess.

– {hmm. below there is an excellent angle of the half-painted paint job on that cute German table.}

– the desk was a $60 Craigslist score. I have big plans for that desk… stay tuned…

– the rug: Pottery Barn outlet for $130. Indoor/Outdoor is perfect for boys + projects.

– baskets galore – of course.

– here is a close-up of the shelving made by Pop-Pop, made to fit the baskets. It was one of his gifts for when we first made this a nursery {ok. I swore I would not cry. Indulge me as I digress: when we moved our firstborn out of this room, I cried like he was moving to college. Can anyone else relate??}.

– Those standing magazine holders are our version of The Workbox System, in case you are a curious home-schooler or a mom who gets giddy over promoting independence in your kiddo… or maybe yourself!

– here we have two boys in their dunce caps:

{kidding.}

they actually had school on this day while wearing their hats from an old halloween costume, 2 yrs. ago. …….Oh. did I hear you say that you want to see that picture?? But, of course.

So stinkin’ cute I could eat them. But I am afraid of gagging on their turtleneck beards.

So, do you have a space that needs to be cleared out for learning and play? What do you think about soft neutrals for a learning space? As always, I love to hear your thoughts!
