ditto :: an amazing library; part one.
Monday, October 17, 2011 by {darlene}

Today’s ditto post is part one of two posts I will be doing on this {awesome} room. I have two pictures of this space, from two different angles, and it was far too gorgeous to lump both pictures together. Far too ditto-worthy! Part two will be featured next Monday.

Enjoy dissecting this room {featured in Chicago Home and Garden}, and discovering what you would like to ditto from this space. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

  1. deep gray-blue walls. I love the complexity of this color, and the drama! It gives such depth to the room, and somehow manages to behave like a neutral. Now, that is my kind of canvas!
  2. the most to-die-for rug I have ever seen. Does anyone know the source for this… the most AMAZING rug EVER?? I am guessing that it could only become mine in my dreams, and I am not quite sure how I could actually ditto something so unique… but, just in case it happens to accidentally land at my doorstep, I need you to know how badly I want to ditto this rug. Badly.
  3. orange bookshelves. I have a love affair with orange. And I am just taken by how swanky these clean-lined shelves look with a rich splash of orange. I am unsure if that is paint, or some kind of textured paper. I am leaning toward the paper, especially since it seems to have color variation and texture. Either way, this is such a high-gloss glamour look, and a dramatic statement for a library. It brings the room to life!
  4. a velvet sofa. in olive green. I adore velvet sofas. I adore olive green. I am fully prepared to ditto some olive green velvet! gorgeous.
  5. gold drapes with a golden, long, roman shade. This is such a beautiful window treatment, and it is made even richer in its beauty by its gilded look. But its impact is doubled because the bright, shiny, and light effect of the gold drapes contrasts dramatically with the matte, deep, blue-gray walls. An amazing use of contrast.
  6. a show-stopping and fun chandelier. Every room needs a disco-esque light fixture to up the fun-level, no? Just ask Edie.
  7. restraint and minimized clutter on the bookshelves. The orange is fabulous, right? Well, all could have been lost if those shelves were all cluttered up with miscellany. Instead, this designer wisely stuck to tightly arranged books that sit all in a row, and a few pieces of functional sculpture and pottery that have a big presence. It is the restraint and decorating self-control that make these shelves so gorgeous.
  8. pieces that don’t match, but are each strong in presence. This ditto-able idea is not just found in the ceramics pieces I just mentioned, but are found on an even larger scale with this rooms furnishings. The sofa and the two chairs actually have nothing in common… other than the fact that they are each strong pieces that are loved by their owner… and therefore, they work. That is definitely a design philosophy of mine: that you should buy pieces that you REALLY love, and magically, they will work together if you employ symmetry and restraint along side of them. hmmm. sounds like I need to write a post on that.

Weigh in. So, what would you {steal} from this space??

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO, 1-8? OR SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

P.S. {I shared a very important post last week. Do you create or design… anything? For information on the Master Designer Blog Roll, click here.}

an invitation :: A Design Manifesto
Friday, October 14, 2011 by {darlene}

This post stems from a seed that was planted in my heart a long time ago; around the beginnings of Fieldstone Hill Design. I hope you will read through it, as I would love to invite you to join me!

I have always loved design, but it is just a small part of my life. I write about it here at Fieldstone Hill; and it is an amazing outlet for me to go on and on about the things I have a passion for… without becoming a bore at a dinner party. And design is a true passion of mine.

But the {darlene} that you meet here each day has higher priorities and callings than solely design; and I only mention them from time to time here on this venue. For me, my dream of interiors and love for creating beauty is not at the absolute top of my life list. Maybe it is the same for you.

I wrote about it a bit here. And listed my priorities of God, loved ones, then life’s work.

I love beautiful design, make no mistake. Yet still, I know who my true loves are. And, I don’t mind telling you that! The longer I live, the more that I realize that success is fleeting, health is temporary, things are just a lie, and time is precious. First things must come first.

Your list may not be the same, and if it is not, I deeply hope you will read this blog and find great delight and inspiration – regularly – in the beautiful design and interiors that are shared here at Fieldstone Hill.

But if it is, I invite you to read the following Design Manifesto, and I invite you – if you are a creator of anything – to declare that you are also a Master Designer:

“I am a Master Designer.

I love Beauty;
I see potential and I want to fill it with beauty.
I aim to create something beautiful that is worthy of joy.

Design is a high calling, one that can improve the lives of others, be a means to foster relationships, and add much joy to my family.

I appreciate fine and lovely things, but they are not my treasures.
I know what is truly important, and
I do not aim to “store up my treasures here on earth.”*

I live to bring glory to God, the Ultimate Master Designer.
He created Beauty.
He created all beautiful things.
And, He created my passion for design, and set that joy in my heart.

Everything that I create,
and have created,
is because I myself was created by a Master.

I am a Master Designer.”

*{verse reference, Matthew 6:19}

If these words ring true for you, I invite you to join a very special list of bloggers that has just begun, but is growing every day. Click here to find out more, and to join the Master Designer Blog Roll.

I have always wanted a simple, pure, and small way to share with others that I love God above all else, even above beautiful design. Won’t you join me?

A special thank you to Melissa of the Inspired Room, Myra of My Blessed Life, Traci of Beneath my Heart, Rhoda of Southern Hospitality, Beth of Home Stories A to Z, Nester of Nesting Place and Angela of The Painted House for your encouragement and support!

The only thing needed to pull something off is the desire to pull it off. -Adam Lambert

or as I always say:

“sometimes, the only thing needed to create Beauty is GUTS.” – {me}

maybe you wouldn’t take things quite so far?

but, be inspired to pull-things-off that you never thought you could… by thinking you can. Take your decorating one step further. Paint with that color you love, without fear. Wear that stunning outfit that feels like “too much.”

So, Do you have the guts????

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 by {darlene}

It’s “A Room I Love” Day….just a simple hello, from me to you, featuring a Room that I Love, and a quick list of why I love it:

This stunning room, and its unique design elements, immediately caught my eye. I can imagine it as a girls’ room, or as a fantastically dreamy guest room. Do you love it??

{ via Restoration Hardware}

WHAT I LOVE:

  1. the symmetry!!! of course.
  2. that teeny-tiny precious chair in the center, that invites a small child, or maybe a doll.
  3. twin, matching beds flanking a small dresser. I have always loved this room layout.
  4. all of the french ticking!
  5. tufted walls. amazing.
  6. silhouettes. en masse, even! Oh, how I love thee.
  7. the cream, natural, and pale wood color scheme.
  8. a crystal chandelier. always wonderful.
  9. vintage suitcases for storage.
  10. grand mirror and petite mirrors.

DO YOU LOVE IT?? WHAT DO YOU LOVE?
