ditto :: hide the laundry. now that is my style.
Tuesday, May 10, 2011 by {darlene}

Yes, my ditto post is on Tuesday. That is because, yesterday, I had a little gift to give to everyone. Be sure to hop over to this post to get your Mother’s Day gift from me {even if you are not a Mother}.

I adore this laundry space more than any other I have seen. It is clean, crisp, and a masterful example of Hiding the Uglies.

ditto :: {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. the stunningly simple custom cabinetry that hides the washer and dryer, yet keeps it so accessible. It also serves to create a perfect folding and working surface. The matching knobs seal the deal. I simply LOVE this idea. I wish I had seen it before designing my laundry space.
  2. the muted and serene colors. A putty-gray-green, offset by white, and more white. It makes me want to sniff in crisp, cottony smells all day long.
  3. the disappearing drying rack, built into the left corner. It is painted white to match the walls, and this turns the utility into the elegant! I adore little more than the combination of usefulness and beauty.
  4. gorgeous products. We all have mundane things that must be done. Why not put our products in beautiful, accessible containers? Our laundry powders in gorgeous porcelain? Why not buy our hand soaps in delicious fragrances? simple pleasures to turn a chore into a ritual.
  5. a lovely shelf is added for useful storage, and then painted white to disappear into the wall – showcasing the items that are resting above.  It adds architectural interest, while creating the perfect spot to house vases and pitchers that are not used every day.
  6. displaying only the lovely. Hide the uglies, but display the lovely. We all have limited storage space, so why not display those things that look lovely? For me, this means displaying items that look lovely en masse. Items grouped together that look similar will give you maximum decorating impact. Here, only glass and white ironstone are displayed. This continues the peaceful, white-washed look of the room.
  7. Gorgeous laundry baskets. Have you ever thought of replacing your plastic laundry baskets with beautiful, shaker inspired, handmade pieces? Or how about keeping your plastic ones, hiding them in the closet, and displaying an amazing hand-crafted basket that can remind us that beauty can be found in the mundane.
Is it possible to get so excited about a laundry space? This one speaks to me of such peaceful beauty! How about you?

{lily of the valley; from Fieldstone Hill’s gardens}

My regular Monday ditto post will happen tomorrow… I just had to take today as an opportunity to give everyone a little gift in honor of Mother’s Day, and in honor of all the amazing mothers out there who are tending hearts and tending homes.

So, for everyone, this week I am offering my Single-Question Design Service for FREE! Here is a description of the service:

The Single-question Design Advice
I will give you my guidance/advice/opinion on a single design question. This will be based on your photograph and your detailed question.  For example: This option is useful in picking room colors, discovering pillows to revitalize a couch, or finding a piece of furniture for a problem spot. Accessible resources will be included.
{normally, Single-question Design Advice is offered for a fee of  $20 per question.}

But not this week! This week it is free!!

If you have a burning design question, and would like to take advantage of this gift, please send me an email at fieldstonehill@gmail.com,

  1. this business week {before May 14, 2011}
  2. with the Subject heading of “Mothers are wonderful,” and
  3. include your question, and any necessary pictures or measurements in the email.
No strings attached. A gift from Fieldstone Hill Design to you! And you don’t have to be a mom to accept this gift; so enjoy.
Please be patient with me as I attempt to respond to your emails. {My first job is being Mommy, after all.}
As always, thank you for all of your support as I build up this wonderful dream of mine that I call Fieldstone Hill Design.
