inspiration :: from the art of flowers
Tuesday, March 8, 2011 by {darlene}

This amazing arrangement, a gift from a friend,
has been gracing my home.

Every day, when I look at it, I marvel at the inspiration that it provides.

The most beautiful yellow-green paint?
and A tiger-speckled yellow curtain?
How about adding the perfect magenta silk-velvet, gracing a curvy chair?
wouldn’t they make a lovely combination?

even so,
the beauty could never match the brilliance that we find in Creation.

ditto :: a peaceful Master bedroom
Monday, March 7, 2011 by {darlene}

One might dismiss this beautiful room…. thinking “wow, that space is out of my league. I will never have a bedroom that looks anything like that.” And just like that, they stop dreaming.
But even if you have a teensy-weensy bedroom {which, by the way, I LOVE teeny bedrooms. Prefer them, actually}, you could still borrow some of the wonderful design elements that are present in this space:

{house beautiful}

ditto :: {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. Using a rug on top of your carpet. layers, layers, layers. a lot of people don’t think to layer their rugs, but it can be a great way to cozy up a space, hide an ugly spot on a carpet, define a specific area in your room, or liven up an older carpet. And, it can simply be a way to add more patterns and/or color into your space.
  2. Mirrored built-in closets. I love this choice. Mirrors look oh-so-Hollywood tucked into your closet door panels, and they add more depth and light to a room. Not to mention, mirrors also happen to be functional in the closet area. Functional Hollywood? sold.
  3. A snug and happy couch. I love that, tucked into the window nook, is an actual couch that fits perfectly inside – as opposed to a built-in. The couch, and its upholstered huggable arms, seems twice as cozy as even the most deliciously cushioned built-in bench. Wonder which came first: the couch or the nook?
  4. Yes. I am a sucker for a gorgeous wooden chair with a curved back, and the one chosen for this room is just beautiful. Love her legs and her C-curve arms.
  5. I know that chandeliers are a trend in bedroom decorating these days. But how about the all-out, grandiose foyer-sized glass chandelier as featured in this bedroom? It is a gutsy and stunning piece. Who wouldn’t enjoy waking up to see such elegance?
  6. I love the palette; Soothing neutrals and coco/mocha colors remind me to relax, unwind, and quiet my thoughts. It is a great color palette for a Master, but also perfect for a guest suite, since we want {most of} our guests to relax and unwind in our homes.
  7. I am in love with window nooks.  I have met very few window nooks that I do not adore. This has to be my favorite design element in this space. And more people have the potential to create a window nook than realize! Take a look around your home. Do you have a wall with a large window that is centered on the wall. Imagine framing it with built-ins, bookshelves, or even two identical armoires. Place a delicious place to sit, right in the middle below the window. And there you have it: A dreamy nook.
  8. Hard-wired, matching lamps above a reading area, flanking the nook. I love the symmetry and practicality of this lighting solution. Perfect for curling up with a book.
  9. A big ol’ bed. Now, I must be honest: Design-wise, I find queen beds to be more attractive and fitting for most spaces. King beds are just so… so… in your face. But phooey with all that. Nothing says comfort like a big ol’ bed. Besides, how else am I to snuggle effectively with all three boys piled into the bed at the same time? Priorities, people.
  10. Fresh flowers and Art. No room is complete without these two masterpieces.
So… a room like this could be yours! What would you ditto from this beautiful Master Bedroom?

vision :: enjoying potential; what is and what will be
Friday, March 4, 2011 by {darlene}

Sometimes, when I browse the web, and pour over the amazing posts on DIY projects, renovations, and creative masterpieces…. I can become overwhelmed with all that I have not done, or all that I still hope to do, or all that I wish I could do.
Sometimes it happens when I look up and see that yes, I still have wallpaper-peel remains all over my kitchen. I still have boxes, unpacked, after 6 years in this home. I still have to do this. I still have to do that.
Sometimes, I start that mental rhetoric, where I say to myself “darlene, if only you would just buckle down and do this project or that project that you have been meaning to do…”

Meanwhile, I forget how far I have already come.
I forget all that I already choose to do.
I forget that I am in the middle of one of the best-est and brief-est seasons of life: enjoying little ones.
and I forget that we cannot do it all.

It is to these thoughts that I say, “don’t loose heart! all in due time. It’s season will come.”
and, it is to these thoughts that I want to remind myself:

There is as much joy in the potential as there is in the finished project. maybe more joy.
There is hope.
There is promise.
There is, well,
potential.

and potential is beautiful.

So, to remind myself that potential is to be enjoyed; not rushed, I thought I would start a new set of posts that feature photos from my home…. photos that could be seen as “boy, there is a lot to do there!,” but instead I am choosing to see them as a glimpse of the beautiful potential that we are blessed to have.

Here is the first:

unpainted, unfinished, and unused…. a beautiful, sunny corner in our master bedroom is waiting for two, comfy, matching chairs, an ottoman, a small table and lamp; A place where my honey and I can read together.

What areas in your home did you think of right away when you read this post? Could it be that we should be enjoying the potential that we are so fortunate to ponder?

Isn’t potential grand??

object :: hand thrown pottery mugs
Thursday, March 3, 2011 by {darlene}

I think that dish-ware is a fantastic area of your home in which to great creative and artistic. In our home, our daily dish-ware is hand thrown pottery. When we were married and had the opportunity to register for china or daily dishware, we opted out, and instead purchased beautiful pottery from a friend.

Pottery is a beautiful way to bring functional, purposeful works of art into your every day. It is a way to add an extra dose of enjoyment and beauty to a regular ritual.

Drinking a hot cup of delicious coffee or tea from this mug…..

knowing that it was made by an artist and, more importantly, a friend, is a joy for me.

And since you know how I love etsy.com, I had to hop over to see what kinds of beautiful, handmade mug offerings they had. My visit did not disappoint:

 {AbbyTPottery} I love that these are called “huggable” mugs, don’t you?

 {KaransPotsAndGlass} I love the shape of this slender mug with a long, skinny opening to fit four fingers through. My favorite way to sip.

 {MoorefieldPottery} with an elegant curve, no?

{NstarStudio} simply darling. The shape and color of these beauties remind me of ancient relics.

{amandagentry} smooth, classy, celedon, and detailed

{scarecrow3331} I love how earthy these are.

{TheMudPlace} If your morning can’t be peaceful, why not your mug?

Oh! and if you are a fan of your hot-cup-of-something in the morning, you might enjoy this ditto post about creating a coffee bar.

Do you drink from a special mug in the morning?
