ditto :: wake me up before you go-go
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 by {darlene}

{Welcome to those of you who are visiting from the beautiful home, Red Door Home. I hope you enjoy your stay. I would be delighted if you Followed along!}

I am excited to be doing one of my favorite types of posts again today, the ‘ditto.’
Ditto posts are my way of analyzing photos of beautiful design, that I happen to adore, and then deciding what it is that I might copy {or ‘ditto’} from the space. Plus, the how and why.

And when I saw this heavenly sight, I just knew it called for a ditto:

{Martha Stewart}

ditto :: {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. just the sheer fact that there is a cappuccino center. I want to steal that. I love the idea of having a little spot, solely devoted to the fine art of hot beverages. It can be in your kitchen. In a bar area. Near the door {why not in the mudroom?}. I love the thought of one in the master bath. pure luxury.
  2. the muted grey married to all the stainless. It is breathtaking. industrial. It says, “I take my coffee seriously.”
  3. The open shelving. A perfect excuse to make sure you are drinking out of something beautiful. Did I mention that drinking hot beverages is a fine art?
  4. crisp white cups, stacked like soldiers at the ready. In front of deep grey. gorgeous.
  5. I love that tea is not left out. If you are a coffee lover, it is easy to forget our more genteel friends. And we never want to forget our friends. Having a beautiful teapot for loose leaves and lingering is a joy. I would recommend checking out potters on etsy.
  6. big cup little cup. what are you in the mood for today? choices are always good. love it.
  7. ok, so most of us do not own that stunningly expensive cappuccino maker. But, even for a much more modest maker, there is no reason not to go with one that is beautiful and pleasing to the eye. Stainless. My next coffeemaker will be stainless.
  8. I think what really makes this space enticing is the beauty and order of the cups. Honestly. Don’t they just invite you to partake??
Have you had your cup today?

the man of the house
Monday, January 31, 2011 by {darlene}

One cannot own a home that is circa 180 years old unless there is at least one handy member of the family.
I am not that person.

My wonderful hubby, however, IS!! Three cheers!

But this post is not about how he humors my love for decorating, or how he tackles projects, or how he helps me rearrange furniture or how he indulges my must-have purchases for our home {within reason. wink}.

This post is about the more important things.
Meet the Man of the House:

He is handsome.
He is kind.
He is generous. so generous.
He is filled with compassion that simply translates to action.
He is not a man of lots of words…
But what he says is wise.
He shows his love through acts of service.
He knows all kinds of mathematical equations off of the top of his head; which I think is cool.
He is an amazing father. The kind who comes home from work to play with his kids, never with the TV remote or the newspaper.
And if I am busy with something, he asks me “What can I do for you, baby?”
He loves the Lord, and is unswerving in his faith.
He has the highest standard of moral code. Never cheating. Never compromising.
He is loyal.
He has the best laugh. And it is one of my favorite sounds in the world.
He has “smiling” eyes.
He is ever faithful in prayer. If he tells you he will be praying for you, he will.
He has the kind of work-ethic that this country was built on.
He is witty.
with my man,
What you see is what you get. A devoted, loving father who puts God and us first and works hard and laughs hard.
Just ask anyone who knows him.

God gave me this amazing man, despite myself. And every day with him is a day that I am further blessed.

Happy Birthday, honey. I love you. Toujours.

colors :: a punch color genius
Friday, January 28, 2011 by {darlene}

Today I am finishing up a small series on using Impact Color in your space, or what I call “punch colors.

When I began writing about this concept, a blog friend of mine came to mind immediately.
Why?
Because she knows how to seriously rock color, and she knows how to use punch colors in her spaces to make them phenomenal.

Meet the very talented Shannon Berry.

I just love how this girl uses color! Don’t you?? And not just any color… Gutsy color!

And feast your eyes on the four pictures below. They feature a project where Shannon renovated and staged a townhouse space.
So, with a very modest budget, she whipped up these wonderful spaces.
You must go to her post and read more.

Great use of color in all of these spaces. And with the exception of the orange club chairs {which she got for a steal anyway}, all of her fantastic color additions are great examples of successfully, and creatively, using a punch color.

…………I told you that she was a punch color genius!
Hop on over to Shannon’s blog, and be sure to tell her how wonderful she is!! How can you not love a girl who knows how to work some color?

colors :: how to use punch colors
Thursday, January 27, 2011 by {darlene}
This week, we have been taking a look at fun, accessible ways to add color impact to your home, using the concept that I call “punch colors.”

First, we learned what punch colors are. Then, we made our own list of our favorite punch colors. And yesterday, we took a look at some beautifully decorated spaces that had their own punch colors.
Today, I want to share with you the ways that I think punch colors could be used effectively.

At Fieldstone Hill, like at many of your homes, we do not have the funds to decorate our home on a whim, or the inclination for that matter, to change out a color scheme once every two years.  So, when we invest in large ticket items, I need to invest in large pieces that are mostly neutral or adaptable. For me, this means a brown velvet sofa; Built-ins that are painted in French Ivory. or Black; Slipcovers that are mocha; Lots of wood, fieldstone, and brown salvaged marble; and the special-order-custom-size-for-each-window blinds that are winter white.

 {this and above: Fieldstone Hill}
However, this does not mean that my home needs to be devoid of color. I love color. I definitely have some favorite colors; they are not shy colors. And, I seek to add more color to my home.

Even so, I am not willing to make a costly investment in colorful high-ticket items. So, I play with the accessories of life. And this is how I recommend that you approach color as well.

Play with the easily adaptable:
Window fabrics. Pillows. Lamp bases. Lamp shades. Paintings. Picture frames. Books. Vases. Art. Art and more Art. Small slipcovers. Floral arrangements. Pottery. Fruit. Painted second-hand furniture. Anything easily painted.

These are the places where I use, and still have future-plans of using, color. Lots of glorious color. My favorites.

If you click back to this post, you will see that the examples of punch color used in these rooms in ways that are easily adaptable. Not expensive. Just fun. And beautiful.

Currently, I am in the {slow} process of adding more punch to our Master Bedroom… one of the few rooms in our home that has all of the walls painted and finished!  Tomorrow, I will show you an example of my own process for picking a punch color for our Master, and how I hope to use it.
