organizing :: in-boxes in the kitchen
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 by {darlene}
This post is part of a linky party on kitchen organization that my sweet friend Traci, at Beneath My Heart, is having.
****
On a large window ledge in our kitchen, we have three in-boxes.
One is mine, one is my husband’s, and one is for very important/time sensitive items {i.e. things that can’t get lost in a pile. like bills}.

This system works beautifully for us. It keeps paperwork off of the table or the countertops, and it keeps items tucked out of view.  Yet, everything is still within reach.

We tend to sort through our personal boxes about once every two months… to throw out the items we don’t need, etc.

Truth be told…

I think I may have some things in my box that have been in there for, oh, 8 years or so now.
shhhh.

but it works.

inspiration :: boys’ room
Tuesday, November 16, 2010 by {darlene}

Our next big decorating project at Fieldstone Hill will be creating a boys’ room.

We are going to be moving our little guy out of his crib, and our bigger guy will be joining him. So, my goal is to create a room for two young brothers to grow in, and enjoy together. Fun. Colorful. But, still classy and timeless.
Here are some photos of the space I will be working with {I can’t wait to tell you about the floors in a future post}:

Against the two windows that you see on this back wall, I will be putting two matching twin beds that will jut out into the room.
So, now I am on a mission to decorate this space, and I had to share my favorite inspiration photos:
Color inspiration {source unknown}:
pattern and window inspiration {source unknown}:
I love this room. The bold stripes. The beautiful map that echoes the fresh colors. The classy-while-still-fun feel. {traditional home}

I also love this room. I especially love the feel and the balance of colors and different furnishing styles. And I am a sucker for a well-made bed. Oh, and awning stripes. yes. {stephen gambrel}
so many ideas rattling in my head….

renovation :: bathroom afters, stage two
Monday, November 15, 2010 by {darlene}

Before we purchased Fieldstone Hill, the upstairs bathroom looked like this. Take notice of the ‘back’ window; the one behind the radiator.
{for additional before pictures, click here}

Within our first month at Fieldstone Hill, we made some immediate changes to this bathroom {you can see them here}.

When we embarked on our major renovation/restoration project a few years later, we made further changes. Unfortunately, we lost the back window due to an addition. We also had to add a bump-in into the bathroom; this made way for a door to the upstairs addition.

Nevertheless, I love both changes. We turned one half of the back window depth into a huge medicine and toiletries cabinet. And while we were adding the bump-in {which actually adds character to the bathroom}, we installed an antique transom window that adds much-needed natural light to our narrow hallway.

Our bathroom looked half-painted like this for nearly two years {we welcomed our second-born little guy}. But we made it our goal to finish the bathroom in 2010… and while we still have a few lights and accessories to purchase, we have finished all of the painting and construction work.

And here are the Afters:

We installed self-made Shaker Pegs, using inexpensive trim board and unfinished pegs. Love these. They add a crispness to the room; a bit like wrapping a bow around a box. Plus, they are quite handy to have around.

Here is a view of the window-turned-medicine-cabinet; finally painted:

This is a good shot of how the new bump-in adds interest and coziness. It wasn’t intended, but I think it gives our bathroom more character.

this antique transom now lets natural light into our hallway.
And the last part of our project: We refurbished an antique beveled-glass mirror, gave it some new hardware, and added even more storage to our only upstairs-bath.
Of course, a good room is never finished. But, there is enough “done-ness” to help this space  finally feel like an oasis.
