inspiration :: hallway photo display

All of these great family photos have got me thinking….

I love the look of large amounts of gathered photos, particularly in a small space like a hallway or stairwell. Some of my favorites….

I love the volume of photos and the unifying frame size. Impact! {Martha Stewart}

Bold frames varying with slender frames. The black horse seals the deal. Frame placement echos the stair stepping. Love that. {credit unknown}

Ancestry meets minimalism. Black and white family heritage photos with exacted white frames. Gallery-like. {credit unknown}

Rectangles and Ovals. Perfect together. {Martha Stewart}

I Adore this. Artistic Close-ups, color-blocks, and family photos… color AND black & white. All unified by crisp, joined frames. Brilliant. {Domino}

My personal fave. Classy but different. The horizonal space that unifies these bold, black frames does the trick. {Martha Stewart}

Now for one I didn’t really love…
I think this doesn’t work for a couple of reasons: These photos are, collectively, too small for this grandiose space. Throw in about 2 or 3 large photos or rich paintings, and take out some of the others small groupings. I also don’t like how the space below the pics is awkward, nor  does it echo the stepping up of the stairs like in the second photo above. {Domino}

Which one is your favorite??

ditto :: a fresh and breathable family space
Wednesday, November 10, 2010 by {darlene}
I usually think about white, cool spaces in the summer.
When it is time for a feeling of breezes.
But, even with cool winds blowing just outside my door, I could still imagine myself in this crisp, white, space.
I think that it is the Swedish-inspired feel that ‘winterizes’ it for me.
And with a few white fur pillows to replace the crisp blue, I can imagine a white Christmas in this room….

{image: house beautiful}

ditto. {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. the amazing charcoal and white striped hardwoods. A fantastic solution for aging floors. So much impact.
  2. I cannot deny. I LOVE the huge Moravian Star chandelier.
  3. Simple and neutral roman shades don’t fight the light.
  4. The horizontal white paneling on the walls. Amazing harmony with the floors.
  5. White. White. and more white.
  6. The Painted steps are ditto-worthy.
  7. Neutral sofa. Always smart. I would have thrown some brown, textured pillows into this space.
  8. The impact of that rug cannot be ignored. Now. the white is brave. A bit too brave for a family? I don’t know. There are so many great imitation choices and fabrics out there at a variety of prices. It rocks in this room.

renovation :: bathroom afters, stage one
Tuesday, November 9, 2010 by {darlene}

This is the first-ever “afters” post at Fieldstone Hill.  I am so thrilled to finally be documenting our home renovation and restoration. More renovation pictures are on the way early next week… including stage two pics of our bathroom renovation.
For Before pictures of this bathroom, click here.

Below are the After pics from stage one of our bathroom renovation:

 Here is what we did:

1. New Wall Paint! Sachet by Martha Stewart for Sherwin Williams {discontinued; but they can still mix it for you}
2. I painted the clawfoot tub in black. The aqua could work in the right setting… but this wasn’t it!
3. Then we moved the tub from the wall over to the window. Better for daydreaming!
4. We installed a custom shower. Love it. More to come on this design.
5. New floors. Carrara marble mini squares. A fave.
6. We installed a built-in linen closet and drawers to make use of the space behind the door and next to the shower. Give me empty space, and I WILL make a closet.
7. New toilet!!! Sigh of relief.
8. Raw Muslin curtains.
9. Towel bars galore and coordinating bath hooks and paper holder.
10. Lots of laundry-fragranced, fluffy white towels.

It was a thorough makeover; mostly everything was replaced. But in this case, we did not have a choice. Not only are we thankful to have all of the mildew and mold out, we love our airy, fresh, and crisp bathroom.

more changes to come in stage two of this restoration/renovation project.

renovation :: bathroom befores
Monday, November 8, 2010 by {darlene}
When we bought Fieldstone Hill in 2005, it had 1 and a half baths.
I am not sure what kind of magic spell we were under when we were looking at the house, but we thought the bathrooms were fine.
we were wrong.
Cosmetically, the bathrooms were not pleasing, but everything seemed to function properly and would serve our needs. But, once we moved in, we quickly realized that this was not the case. Let’s just say that, my advice, if you are about to buy a home:
1. Inspect the toilets, unfortunately on your hands and knees, before they hand over the keys.
2. Get on your hands and knees and smell the shower for mold.
3. and, my $25,000 piece of advice: if your house has a tank, hire a separate Septic Inspector in addition to your home inspection.
Sadly, I have much more advice for home buyers.  But that will come in future posts. Back to fun ‘Before and After’ stuff!
So, true story. Our very first night in our home, the septic backed up and filled our basement. Also. true story. The day after the keys were handed over to us, {we were not living there yet}, I started inspecting the bathroom without rose-colored glasses.
Unfortunately, when I stepped into the enclosed shower, I was smacked in the face with the most offensive smell of sickly mold.
And, unfortunately, I discovered that the toilets were pee-encrusted. Beyond repair. I honestly, to this day, don’t understand how I did not notice this on the walk-through.
I threw a pregnant-lady-fit.
It went something like this {be sure to add overly-dramatic tone and a high pitch} :: “I will NEVER take a shower in that thing!!!!!!!
We took immediate action to redo the bathroom.
So.
Before you take a look at these pictures and say, “well, that’s not that bad….”
Be sure to add the smell.
