ditto :: the most elegant sitting corner in the house

ditto monday image

I have long loved this image below. Today’s ditto is just one small, yet elegant, sitting corner in the living room of a fantastic Manhattan Townhouse, designed by Celerie Kemble. Granted, this is just one tiny snippet of the room. But, packed into this sitting corner is a wealth of details, rich in beauty.

There are so many design concepts we could ditto from this gorgeous sitting corner. As with all of our dittos, let’s study what makes this space SO AMAZING, so that we can learn how to add more beauty to OUR homes!!!

{As always, I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what you would ditto, too. So, be thinking!}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.    PALE PINK WALLS… AND THEN, NO MORE MENTION OF PINK.

When are pale pink walls most powerful? When they stand alone. I love how these pale pink walls stand as the only presence of pale pink in the room. But the walls set a soft stage backdrop for all the bold and rich colors in this room. I especially love how the aquas on the screen, the chair-fabric aqua diamonds, and the aqua ceramic pot add gorgeous contrast against the pale pink walls. Worthy of a ditto!

2.   A FOLDING SCREEN, WRAPPED IN LUSH, PRICEY WALLPAPER.

Need to add a huge punch of drama to your space? Wallpaper a basic screen in a gorgeous, high-end De Gournay paper that draws attention to itself and livens up the room. Ditto.

3.  A CARRERA MARBLE MANTLE.

This ditto-worthy mantle is completely created out of marble, and it is nothing short of stunning. It brightens up the room, and adds instant architectural weight to this sitting corner.

4.   A STUNNING FOCAL PIECE OF ART ABOVE THE MANTLE.

In this case, the stunning focal artwork is a 20th century wooden clock that has been gilded.  Finding a gutsy piece like this is the first step of the process, but then, you need to have the guts to “go for it,” and highlight it. Go for it and ditto a bold focal piece of art!

5.   A SUBTLE SPLASH OF SOMETHING FUN.

This space is filled with rich and lush fabrics and colors, and traditional features such as a persian rug, detailed crown molding, and wood floors ground the space. And then…..The bold tiger print fabric on the stool pops onto the scene. I think the tiger is made twice as fun by showing up in the most refined of spaces.

6.  DARK WOOD FLOORS AND PALE WALLS.

I know. I know. Are you tired of hearing me talk about the power of contrast yet?? But truly. It is such a powerful design element. In this room, I could not help but notice how gorgeous the contrast was between the pale walls, woodwork and mantle and the deep wood floors. Simply stunning. Ditto.

7. RICH. RICH. RICH.

What I love THE MOST about this space, and what makes it unforgettable in my eyes is its richness. Rich velvets. Rich pigments. Rich textures. Rich fabrics. Rich marble. Rich ceramics. Rich gold touches. Even rich peonies in full bloom. No detail is shy or mousy in this space. And I love it for its richness. Definitely Ditto!!

* * * * * * *

SO much goodness.

Love anything I did not mention? or…

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-7? SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

design board :: a gentleman’s library {vote for your favorite drapes}
Friday, August 3, 2012 by {darlene}

My latest design board was a wonderful project, helping my client to create a relaxing gentleman’s library for her hard working husband.

He needed a relaxing haven to give him a rest from his emotionally heavy occupation of oncologist. It was such an honor for me to help this family create a space that would meet that need:

  design board gentleman's library

What I love about this space:

1. The fantastic brazilian hide rug.

2. The rust orange that is woven throughout.

3. Those Ralph Lauren helmet lamps.

4. Gorgeous built-ins, topped with horizontal portrait lighting.

5. The gold animals!

6. Fantastic prints that warm up the space, but are certainly still perfect for a gentleman.

7. The wingback chairs provide a great spot for two to curl up with a book for the evening.

8. The modern-edge, white leather comfort desk chair that gives a streamlined look to a traditional desk.

My client and I had fun playing around with different curtain options.

I thought it would be fun to see which one  you all like the best: 1. orange, 2. blue, or 3. brown??? Each one gives the room a bit of a different feel. I can’t wait to hear which fabric gets your vote!:

Once again, the beauty of a vision design board: my client was so thankful to see the entire room plan PRIOR to making her purchases, so that she could move forward with confidence, knowing that the room would pull together with each room element she adds.

I can’t wait to see which drapes my clients select for this gentleman’s library!

What do you think of this eDesign? And, which curtain panels do you love best?  I love hearing your thoughts!

need a vaca and a show house?
Thursday, August 2, 2012 by {darlene}

Okay, so you all know how much I adore my bloggy bud, Angela. You know how I gush about her MAD art skills…. skills that she even passes on to her wee offspring.

Today, I reluctantly share {because I am selfish about my vacation spots. So sue me. If I have ever told you about my favorite spot in Italy… well, consider yourself a VERY close friend indeed! Don’t ask me, either. I will deny you.}…. ahem…. I reluctantly share that she also renovated the most gorgeous cabin in the mountains that is also a rental. Good gracious. Check it:

vaca showhouse

Oh wait. That is not the cabin. But HOW could I resist posting that view first??

That {above} is one of the views from this amazing little gem in the mountains of NC {below}:

Just don’t try to rent it on my weekends, m’kay?

So, I have to tell you about the most fun thing that Angela {cute-stuff/stylish-rebel/talented-beauty extraordinaire} and the very talented interior designer Shannon Berry put together. Do you remember me gushing about Shannon in this post? Yes, she has skills.

Well. Angela and Shannon put their crazy-creative minds together, and created a Showhouse/Shopping package. Spend one day visiting the Cashiers Showhouse, and on your next day, shop! Shannon created a list of must-see antique and vintage shops – and these are her stomping grounds, so I know the list will have some great spots! The special pricing for the cottage is available for August 17-Sept.2. Clickie over here for the Cottage website and to find out all of the details.

Wouldn’t it be so much fun to get together a bunch of girlfriends, road-trip it, shop the best antique stores, visit the showhouse, and stay here?:

sigh. didn’t I JUST get back from vacation?

p.s. Angela. I have my calendar. Book me for a zillion weekends. okay?

p.p.s. This is not a sponsored post. Nope. I just am hoping Angela will let me stay at the Cottage a lot.

p.p.p.s. I stole every single one of those pics off of the TPH blog. Oh, yes, I did.

p.p.p.p.s. If you get to go to the Cottage and Cashiers and antiquing in the NC mountains…. I am jealous.

Sooo… Do you need a vaca? Have you ever been to a showhouse? What is your favorite thing about show-house-ing?

room by room :: phase one. family room.
Tuesday, July 31, 2012 by {darlene}

In June, I shared with you that Cindy of Skip my Lou enlisted my help with her home. We will be going Room by Room, redecorating some rooms in her home. Today, let the redecorating begin!!!!

room by room

On her Skip to my Lou blog today, Cindy is sharing Phase One of her Family Room.

What makes it “Phase One?”  When I start a room with a client, we spend a lot of initial time identifying my client’s personal style. But, once we actually dive into the room, we, of course, start with our main pieces and large surfaces.

Phase One includes:

1. Walls

2. Large Furniture Pieces

3. Rug{s}/Flooring

A lot of times, I also add curtains at this early stage.

Now, Phase One is nothing formal. I don’t tell clients, “let’s stick to Phase One.” {Ha. I think Phase One sounds goofy, star-trekky anyway!}. This is simply my approach to a room as we dive in and get decorating.

I always begin with the colors and feel, and I nearly always move on to Walls, Large Furniture Pieces, and Flooring first. But, of course, this is not a hard and fast rule.

The reason why I generally start there is because it sets the backdrop for the rest of the space.

Sooo…. I know you are itching to see this first Phase of Cindy’s family Room, so hop on over!!

{also, for a few “Before” Pics, be sure to check out this post}
