They just don’t make ’em like they used to.

I would like to make a case as to why I adore older furniture, and why I think it is such a beautiful and sound choice for our homes.

  1. in most cases, the quality is incomparably superior to newly made furniture. Truly; they don’t make ’em like they used to.
  2. the detail! in most cases, the lines of the furniture are more detailed, varied, intricate and beautiful
  3. the legs! Has anyone else noticed how stocky and dull the legs of most new furniture has become? I just don’t want my chairs to have cankles.
  4. comfort. While many plush chairs and sofas touting comfort are being sold in new furnishings, I would argue that the size {particularly the width} has gotten out of control in new furnishings. Granted, many folks around the world have gotten larger… but for many of us, we are having to settle for sitting in a chair where our elbows can barely reach the armrests. I find great comfort in being snug as a bug in my chairs, therefore I love the smaller proportions of older furniture.
  5. And, if you avoid the word ‘antique,’ and instead seek out locations that have large inventories of ‘good, used furniture,’ {don’t forget Craigslist, where I scored this gorgeous pair of maple beds} you will most likely walk away with a beautiful, and very, very affordable deal.

    Good point about the legs on many chairs these days, that is why I'm about to slipcover a couple of mine…to cover those legs!

    I love these beds! I'm in boy-room-makeover mode and I'm hunting down two upholstered headboards to slipcover…and I don't want to pay full retail. Gotta be patient, I guess.

    Looking forward to seeing how this maple-bed room turns out–lovely, I just know!

  • I adore used furniture. I don't see the point of paying for new, less well made stuff while there is such great older stuff out there. I love that I still have the dresser I grew up with and the changing table my mother-in-law used. I am hoping to soon steal a tv stand from her basement too!

    Hi {Darlene},
    I like solid, dove-tailed, burlwood, maple, mahogany, turned, camphored, pedestaled, dinged pieces that are sometimes antique 🙂
    But they better be well-behaved.
    Those headboards are very handsome!
    I love me some Craigslist. Amen.
    Where are they going (a bedroom, I assume, silly me).
    I suppose you'll post about it eventually, LOL!

  • I couldn't agree more. Most of the furniture in our house is either an antique or thrifting find just for the reasons you mentioned. We do have things that we purchased new but were more expensive because we wanted quality. I'm really not a furniture snob because I even have pieces I've found on the side of the road that were made of real wood.I just can't bring myself to buy paperboard furniture! I'm your newest follower. Would love to have you stop by my blog.
