for a song :: chinoiserie treasures
Thursday, August 4, 2011 by {darlene}

I am definitely a Craigslist fan.
First of all, my favorite furnishings are almost exclusively “vintage.” I find older furniture to be more soundly made, and I just love the smaller, thinner lines that good, ol’ furniture has. Therefore, I often turn
to Craigslist, waiting for the perfect piece to come my way.
Like the dreamy beds I scored last Fall.
Well, once again, Craigslist ‘delivered.’ Big time.
Here is a picture of the listing that sent me into emergency “must-have” mode.

aren’t they dreamy?

I immediately saw them as Darlings of the current chinoiserie reign {chinoiserie is a French word, meaning: chinese-like}. These Darlings are not that far off from the darlings below:
This beauty from Williams and Sonoma Home; $750. Each:
Or this gorgeous armchair from  Somerset Bay; Approximately $1,320.00 . Each.
Or this much-admired, chinoiserie armchair by Bungalow 5. Approx. $740.00. Each.
And mine???
{you had better believe they are mine! I high-tailed it out of my house to pick those lovelies up a.s.a.p.}
$30 for both. Oh yes.
I am in love.

I’m thinking that magenta silk-velvet cushions are in their future.
What was your latest score on Craigslist?
And do tell: Do you have your local Craigslist furnishings page as your Home page, {ahem. Like moi.}?

a room I love :: a riverfront living room
Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by {darlene}

It’s Wednesday, so it must be “A room I love” time….just a simple hello, from me to you, featuring a Room that I Love.

Nothing says classic like Phoebe Howard. She has such a gift for balance and scale and symmetry, as well as gentle beauty.
I truly admire Phoebe’s work. And of course, I have ditto-ed her beautiful work {check out this ditto post about a stunning dining room of her design, and this ditto post about a timeless foyer of her design}.

So once again, you are catching me, loving another space by Phoebe Howard. This space is uber-traditional. I don’t tend to be drawn to spaces that I would define as “very traditional,” and despite that, I am still drawn to it:

What I love:

  1. the amazing textured and creamy wallpaper
  2. the dramatic, layered drapes that match the walls… like icing on a cake.
  3. masterful and timeless symmetry.
  4. perfectly balanced furnishings, in presence and height.
  5. The light colors keep the heavy upholstery presence from becoming, well, too heavy.
  6. the soothing colors of cream, blue, and green that work beautifully with the riverfront view
  7. the riverfront view!!
  8. those awesome brass shelves beside the fireplace.
  9. lots and lots of {comfy} places to sit!
  10. tufts. tufts. everywhere.
Do you love it??

ditto :: a gorgeous farmhouse sitting room
Monday, August 1, 2011 by {darlene}

Happy Monday!!

Today is the very last day to enter to win the most gorgeous chandelier earrings from Stella and Dot. Click here to enter! I hope you win!!! {and when you do, can I borrow them from you??}

I am excited to ditto this room for you today, which I think is a brilliant balance between, what I lovingly call, “farmhouse simplicity and high-gloss glamour.” maybe leaning more toward the farmhouse…
In either case, this room is chock full of gorgeous details that you can {steal} and bring into your own space:

{house beautiful}

ditto :: {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. flank a door with two, matching, colorful cupboards. In this case, two gorgeous, paneled, green plate-display cupboards. The symmetry that they create is beautiful, and they bring a solid splash of color into the room. As well as being beautiful, they also serve a purpose…. which the loveliest of things usually do.
  2. “en masse” white plates. Both inexpensive and practical, why not display and decorate with the very things you use every day? We all need to eat off of plates. So, buy classy, lovely plates that add something to your room… and show them off!
  3. a snug little conversation area to sit, read, or eat. Or all of the above. I love how the seating in this area all hovers around a tiny round side-table, and creates a fantastic conversation area, as well as a comfy place to have tea together. It is a perfectly delightful little spot!
  4. ink blue! the pendant lamp and the pillows. Simply stunning against the neutral and soft green backdrops. Loving this for a punch color.
  5. paint a pendant. goodness gracious. Do you see how gorgeous and unique that orbital pendant becomes when painted in a pigment-rich inky blue? This opens up doors for you to purchase a fixture that needs some TLC. Or maybe even one that has an inexpensive finish, then add some gorgeous paint that ties into a punch color in your room. Voila! Glam!
  6. white, alternating stripes on hardwood. How gorgeous is this? It takes guts to take a paintbrush to wood floors as lovely as those… but really! They go from average to absolutely stunning with these crisp, white, ticking-esque stripes. To-die-for!
  7. a tiny bar area. Not enough room in your space for a bar? All you need is a lovely tray, filled up your favorite beverages and maybe a shaker and a glass. Have bar. Will travel.
  8. a small {beautiful} sofa. Who says a sofa has to be large to be useful? If you like any of the loved-ones in your house, you could always pile onto this tiny sofa and snuggle together! That is what this precious, little sitting sofa makes me think about: Snuggling. And I also appreciate it for its beauty: lovely linen and stunning nail heads. Perfect.
So, what would you ditto from this space and add to your home?
