ditto :: a to-die-for nursery
Monday, July 25, 2011 by {darlene}

Happy Monday!

When I first saw this space, I may or may not have let out a little gasp.
Honestly, I think it is one of the most creative and stunning nurseries I have ever seen.
Obviously, that calls for a ditto!

{design by Joe Lucas and Parrish Chilcoat, Lucas Studio}

ditto :: {what I would steal from this space}:

  1. a stunning, out of the ordinary piece of art. I will be honest here. I don’t think it would have ever occurred to me to put a gigantic pelican painting in a nursery. But it works so magically! That crazy bird is both fun and sophisticated, not to mention stately, all at the same time.
  2. mixing soft patterns. I love to mix patterns. What is so successful in this space is that, while the patterns themselves are bold in form, the colors are analogous and soothing. This works so beautifully in a baby’s room. Sweet dreams….
  3. golden sunburst mirrors, times two. Why have one burst of sun, when you can have two.
  4. sophisticated birds. You know that I am not a big fan of themes {read more in this post}. Yet here, even with the repeating birds, I don’t think this room has a bird “theme” per se. I love that the birds show up as more of a fun, surprise touch. A glossy aqua quail {that quail is a sitting duck on that floor after about 9 months, people}, a sweet birdy on the gorgeous side table, a blue songbird on the changing table, and who can forget Mr. Pelican? It is the variation, and the sophistication of the objects chosen {they are not matchy, and they don’t scream out KID STUFF!} that save this room from having a full blown theme.
  5. a greige mantle. LOVE this color. LOVE that it is in a baby room. LOVE that there is a mantle in the baby’s room in the first place! So soothing, and classy, and modern.
  6. that gorgeous chinoiserie side table. It make me think of the project from this post, from Little Green Notebook, that I will definitely be dittoing!
  7. pale aqua, soft cream, peach, brown, tans, and pink. What an amazing, dreamy color palate.
  8. some Non-kid-like-ness. I always love and appreciate when there is a touch of grown-up in a child’s space. Kind of like how using big, grown-up words with your children stretches their vocabulary, using grown-up furnishings stretches their artistic vision.  {but seriously. I am a bit worried about that poor baby and the metal quail. just saying.}

I do think that it is essential that children don’t grow up too fast… so I am happy to see, at least, a classic rocking horse in this room. I could stand to see a few more toys in here… but no doubt mom will soften up on her perfect-room vision once she stares into her baby’s face for the first time. I know I did….

What would you ditto? I would LOVE to hear from you!
