Project Library { new school room }
Thanks for all of your great encouragement regarding our School Room Project!
One of the ‘burdens’ of having all these grandiose decorating thoughts in your head is that you wish you could always be starting up a new major project in your own home. And, like most of you, our household budget is much more “down to earth,” than “pie in the sky.”
But, every once in a while, it is time to start a new project, and I am giddy to have you along for the ride as we attempt to churn out an amazing School Room /Multi-purpose Library!
So.
After many days of studying my fave book about renovating and building small spaces
And he came back to me with these mock ups of the room, which certainly got me all-sorts-of excited:
All of the furnishings will come from our existing stock pile {i.e. randoms floating around somewhere in our house}, including a flat screen that is so old, it may actually be the first one ever invented. It is actually 10 years old, true story.
Hmmm. now:
lighting? brown couch or blue? art? carpeting choices? paint colors? texture? reorganizing all of our crap-ola?
Y’all. This is going to be fun!!!!
So, come on!! What do you think? Ideas? Love?

Goodness, is that beautiful! My heart is going pitter-patter over all those bookshelves, and how nice that you’ll have the natural light from the french doors. I think shelving, natural light, and a comfy place to sit and snuggle are musts in a homeschool room. As I type, I’m sitting in my almost-finished school room — my favorite room in the whole house — so I can just imagine how giddy you must feel. 🙂

WOW, these are the things that dreams are made of… books are like shoes for me – so I’m really digging the concept of all those built-in bookcases. Surprised you did not mention painting the floor with a pattern, going back to your roots of the painted floor upstairs. But way too much work I’m sure. I also love any excuse to purge and sort piles of processions and then to organize it all. Thanks for the inspiration!
Looks absolutely stunning and practical too–lots of storage, light for working,places to read. After a lifetime as an educator, I am curious how your theories of learning motivate your room design? We talk about our design style in making home decor decisions and that plays a huge role in this room as well. Since this is your schoolroom, I am curious how your theories of learning inform room design, as well as how you lay out, construct and implement your curriculum, how you teach, etc. I’m a proponent of theory informing practice which is probably why I respond to how you teach us about home design and decorating decisions.
I’m looking forward to seeing your progress on this fun project. I would keep the sofa as neutral as possible to coordinate with a dark impact wall. The space will get a lot of wear and tear so I know I would feel better if I used a high traffic carpet and layered seagrass on top. For art you can easily use inexpensive frames and pre-cut mats to frame copies of your kids favorite books, handmade self portraits, phrases and verses.

Is it a walkout basement? I can’t tell if either of those doors goes to the outside, but if one *does*, then my advice would be to not have carpet at all, but wood (or tile) with a nice rug over top. Kids tromping in and out over carpet makes it dirty really fast.
I like the use of space, and it’s so worth it when you find yourself living in that space more than any other. We spend more time in our basement school and living rooms than we do on the main floor!
Excited for you and the boys! Alas, the kitchen is our school room…moving every 1-3 years into various homes hasn’t always supplied us with an extra room for it! Regardless, the most important thing is that you’re going to have a blast with the kids! It’s hard work, but SO worth it!!!
Those built ins are to die for! I can’t wait to see everything come together. It is going to be fabulous!
Your kiddos are so lucky to have a space like this! I would love it for my own house, and we don’t home school. This is really exciting to watch. May I add one idea to the mix? Patterned carpeting. Just a thought. 🙂

Okay, I am so excited that you asked for my opinion! That blue velvet sofa is just going to have to work in the living room! It just has to. Its lines are way too perfect and it screams DARLENE! Plus, the brown sofa will better absorb any markers, pencils and crayons you’ll be using for school. I love both sofas, but this is just my gut reaction speaking here.
I really LOVE the new plans for the schoolroom, soooooo exciting for you!!
Your opinion gets much more weight, since you may just end up helping us move the sofas………
