Lessons in Design: Decorating with Warm Walls

Decorating with Warm Walls

There has been a pretty substantial trend toward cool toned walls and white walls in the last few years. The look is fresh and crisp and light-reflecting. It is gorgeous and ditto worthy.

This trend toward the white and crisp has left warm walls in the dust. But for some, the love for a warm glow does not come and go with the trends.

It is to that end that I want to revisit some amazing rooms that are saturated in warmth, and offer

3 simple tips for decorating with warm walls

decorating with warm walls

Warm walls are best when the room also offers some element of contrast to all of that enveloping warmth. Here are some great ways to contrast your warm walls for a designer look:

1. Offer elements of white.

The large white art piece breaks boldly into the warmth for a beautiful balance;

Even a room filled-to-the-brim with warmth {this pic was shared in my Pantone Color of the Year post last week} gets a breath of fresh air with crisp white pillowcases and white lamp shades:

White shutters, white art matting, white pattern on the walls, a crisp white chair, white lamps, and a stunning white horse head all add the perfect resting point for your eyes in this gorgeous warm room:

2. Contrast Warm Walls with Blue:

 Bold cobalt blue offers a bright contrast to the warm, wood toned walls:

Even with all this blue, this children’s room feels warm and cozy thanks to the texture and the soft warm-brown of the walls:

The pops of blue in this design board below offer the perfect contrast to this warm, cozy space:

And for those who don’t desire a contrast, but instead want to go all-out with pure warmth:

3. Live up the warm walls with Tone on Tone:

soft yellow-greens everywhere bathe this dreamy space in warmth:

Warm beiges and tans layer on top of each other for a soothing space:

Warm naturals and textures fill this space, creating a comfortable and welcoming entry:

Warm ivory walls get warmer with each new layer of fabric that is draped into the space:

Do you already have warm walls and need to freshen them up with some of these ideas?

Marsala Love – the Pantone color of the year 2015
Thursday, December 11, 2014 by {darlene}

Last week, Pantone announced its Color of the Year 2015 in this press release:

Marsala!

Pantone_Introducing_Color_of_the_Year_Marsala_banner

Think Faded-Wine-Red

I am already hearing lots of interesting buzz about this choice, and I’ll tell you – here is where I stand:

I have hardly ever met a color I didn’t like. The same goes for Marsala. Actually, I LOVE to be stretched out of my usual color palette and think of ways that I can be creative, making a new color work for me.  When you are an interior designer, making a color work is kinda just a day in the office.

Sometimes you have to work around that sofa. Or that family heirloom. Or that client fave that you could (personally) do without.

And it is in that spirit that I pretty much ADORE the challenge of making any color work. So if Marsala is not your instant cup of tea, challenge yourself to pair it with colors that ARE your cup of tea. It may be just the kick (or calm) your space needed.

If you are itching to know how to incorporate a new, fun color into your space, I shared tons of tips in my post about last year’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid.

And I definitely recommend taking the Color Quiz that I wrote up. This will help you figure out how much to bring a “new, trendy” color into your space.

Enjoy some Marsala eye candy,

and envision adding a splash of this faded-wine-red into your home and wardrobe:

 I am especially loving this pale red paired up with cool tones, like the blue walls above. Stunning.

And I was tickled to discover that I already have a dash of marsala in our master bedroom, in the pretty little corner chair:

Do tell! What do YOU think of Marsala for 2015?

Would you be willing to toss a Marsala pillow into your mix?

Overcoming Decorating Paralysis :: Permission to not change a thing
Thursday, December 4, 2014 by {darlene}

Permission to not change a thing in your home

permission to not change a thing in your home

This post is a part of the popular series, Overcoming Decorating Paralysis.

permission to not change a thing

* * *

I find myself in a challenging spot these days as it relates to all things home and all things interior design and …. actually, all sorts of other things. And it has made for a quiet blog as of late.

I wish we were in my dining room together, having a cup of coffee. And sharing stories about how we long to create beautiful spaces, and yet we have this-such-obstacle, or that-such-obstacle. And I wish we were laughing about the mistakes we’ve made and how having a beautiful home means taking risks, and how living with beauty requires intentional choices.

If we WERE sitting here having coffee, this is what I would be telling you today:

that some seasons in life catch you off guard.

{insert interruption from screaming, teething cute baby here}

and then I would commisserate that some seasons leave you no room for fluffing your nest or putting the cherry on top.

{insert me yelling up the stairs to my boys to STOP fighting}

and then I would share: some seasons are simply about survival.

{insert complete silence in my house, which proceeds to make me VERY nervous and cause me to get up from enjoying our coffee together to investigate}

and that is where I am today. My heart for my home is in a temporary state of survival.

I sit here with nothing extra to pour out into my home and nothing extra to pour out of my heart. Everything I have to give, I am currently pouring out into my children and  my husband, and I am taking the leftovers to take care of myself.

Because at the end of the day, THESE PEOPLE are what makes this house a home. And our memories are the TRUE STUFF of living with beauty.

If you know a thing about me or about this blog, you know that I LOVE talking about real ways, and practical ways, that we can Overcome Decorating Paralysis. From finally making a decor decision, to having the guts to go for the things we love, to truly knowing our personal style.

But today, I would like to share a new lesson with you.

and with me.

Sometimes, we are NOT SUPPOSED TO OVERCOME.

Sometimes we are supposed to sit. Right where we are.

And not. change. a. thing.

Thou shalt not overcome decorating paralysis. At least not right now.

My head has no room for it. And my brain is full. And my days are too busy.

AND THAT IS OKAY!

I have permission to not change a thing.

There WILL be time for change and decorating and fluffing later. And it will be here before we know it. And when I am ready to change, I need to remember this life of ours is all about seasons.

And I know. I know because I have a big gap between my boys and my baby girl – and I have seen how there IS time for all of this later. I know how – despite the slow minutes – the weeks and years are fast.

A photo card is like a gift { + a giveaway for YOU!}
Tuesday, November 25, 2014 by {darlene}

I love Christmas photo cards.

When I get one in the mail, it is just like a gift from a friend.  And in some ways, it feels like a mini-visit with my friend and their family. Which makes all the difference when you live far away.

And that is why, when I can, I send photo cards for Christmas.

This is the third year I have partnered with Minted to create my Christmas cards, and I have learned one thing: Minted is consistently all about quality and unique work-of-art cards. ALL about it.

I am delighted with my cards year after year.  When my cards arrive in the mail, what I thought looked fantastic in my online proof is actually out-of-this-WORLD in real life! That is why I WISH you could actually hold and feel these cards instead of seeing them on a computer screen.

Minted photo cards 2

check out the thickness of the cards:

Minted photo cards thickness

And another thing about Christmas photo cards:

Did you know that taking family photos gets harder year after year? Maybe this is actually in direct relationship to how many children you have? Like, I think I lost 10 pounds the morning of our photo shoot – hustlin’ around, trying to get all 3 children to listen and smile for our amazing photographer. {And she is amazing, y’all. She laughed her way through our crazy session, and then proceeded to send amazing photos my way. Which is why I go to her again and again. Bless her!} The odds that all precious individuals will be looking precious at the click of a camera gets rarer and rarer.

But the effort of time spent, sweat burned, and money invested is worth it. Year in and year out.

And when I put the effort into getting my Christmas cards out to friends, I get to send a hug via snail mail. And it is personal and lovely and a keepsake.

* * *

This year, I chose the feature of Free Recipient Addressing … so I did not have to fill out a single envelope! Aren’t the addresses beautiful?:

Minted photo cards 1

I love that Minted offers the option of adding a picture with text to the back. I always end up with lots of pics that I want to share with my friends {thanks again, Kayce!}, and the back is perfect for this plus a fun, welcoming message:

Don’t you just want some of these to give to the special people in your life??

This year, Minted and I want to gift one of you with your own set of Christmas cards! A $250 giveaway to Minted!

HEAD HERE to enter to win a $250 credit at Minted.

Entries will be accepted through November 30th. A winner will be announced on December 1st with an update to this post {the winner will also be contacted}.

Also, you can click on the image below for a 15% discount on your cards this year!

Thank you for purchasing your Christmas cards through my links, sweet friends!!!

Yes, the art of letters and photos in the mail is so special this time of year. Enjoy sending your own hug to a mailbox near you.

Do you send Christmas cards? Tell the truth… don’t you just love the photo cards the best?
