Fall Home Tour of Fieldstone Hill – #BloggerStylinHomeTours
Thursday, September 24, 2015 by {darlene}

I am excited to, once again, be a part of the Blogger Stylin Home Tour series, hosted by the very lovely Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Company (hi girl!).

Thank you to those of you who have hopped over from Restless Arrow. I loved her fresh and breezy home tour, and her sweet spirit! So nice to meet you, Amber. For a list of all of the Blogger Stylin Home Tour participants, head to the bottom of this post. Also, be sure to follow along with us via the hashtags: #BloggerStylinHomeTours and #BSHT .

If you are new to Fieldstone Hill Design {FHD}, I am pretty excited that you are here. I am an interior designer who is designing my own house the “slowly-but-surely way.” Please comment to introduce yourself! I would love to connect! Also, join me on Instagram {which gets more sneak peeks of my home than ever}, and Pinterest too {I can be accused of being an addict. It’s kinda my scene.}

The Fall Home Tour of Fieldstone Hill

As of yesterday, it is officially Fall.

I am a Fall girl. So much so, that I actually had to move back Yankee-bound to PA from South Carolina so that I could have “a real fall” again. So what if it is followed by a bitter winter? I’ll hear no talk of that!

I am a Fall girl. I specifically designed my entire wedding day around the peak season of Fall, and my favorite tree is the Sugar Maple because of the oranges and yellows it bestows in October. I am convinced there is no bluer blue than the sky on a crisp day in Autumn. And the blue is made bluer when drying corn covers a field in the foreground.

An October Ninth kinda day….

Wedding kiss via @fieldstonehill

Because I am a Fall girl, my home always has a touch of Fall in the air. Our floors are pumpkin pine. Our walls are hay, and dirt, and drying-cornstalk colors. My bed – and my boys’ beds – are draped in Pumpkin tones, and natural rattan fibers can be found in every single room. And then there is blue. Because the colors of Autumn are nothing if not draped against the most beautiful, crisp blue sky you have ever seen.

Fall is in the very walls of Fieldstone Hill. Welcome in. I am so glad you are here!

Window boxes and a full set of shutters are in her future. Can’t you see them now?

Fieldstone Hill was built in approximately the 1820s. She (she’s a girl, right? too high-maintenance to be a boy..) has lived through the Civil War. She has 3 outbuildings: a springhouse, an original log cabin 1796 homestead (pictured above), and a barn on its last legs. Poor girl, she needs lots of work and hand-holding. But with each year, bit by bit, we lovingly bring her back to her new glory.

Here is a pic of our front porch, after the Fall rain. Mums, you say? Fieldstone Hill was born for this…

Fall-Home-Tour-Fieldstone-Hill-front-porch

Oh, man. I was really tempted to Photoshop this next picture to add some fall mums to the lonely pot, but something about this picture says home to me. This is the original (THICK!) side door on Fieldstone Hill, decorated with nothing but muddy boys’ boots.

And, no matter what you see in all of these glorious home tours combined, I can guarantee you will find nothing more beautiful than muddy-boy-boots.

Won’t you come inside?

The Front Hall

When you walk through either the front door or the side door at Fieldstone Hill, you enter our “Front Hall.” It is one of those rooms that has so many passageways that it is tough to decorate. It functions as our music room, and it gets daily ivory-tickling use.

See that spot over there by the green vase and the window? That is where my someday-baby-grand-piano is going to go. The only tough choice? Classic black, or walnut? Black, I think.

The Living Room

The boys dubbed this “The Big Room,” and the name stuck. This is where we spend our relaxing hours: In a new-old room, filled with new construction and old beams and an old mantle. For more on this space, and for additional pics, head to this post.

Angela, if you are reading this… when are you going to paint me some glorious art for that back wall? I’m thinking a lot of white, some chartreuse, yellow and fuchsia… no body parts…. #Iharrasspeopleforart

If you are wondering about the amazing sofa, and she is amazing,  I wrote about her here.

The Library

It is about time I shared some finished pictures of this space! I was so good at updating all of you as our library project was underway, but, ahem, never shared final photos. Better late than never.

From the stairwell in our Living Room, the carpeted staircase brings you down to our mudroom (see the muddy-boy-boots?) and the doorway to the left is our new library. We are a homeschooling family, and we may just be drowning in children’s books. Thank goodness, this custom library has helped us bear our burden. I designed it to be a flex room over the years, and someday it will come into its own as a swanky bar hangout. I’m sure of it.

The Dining Room

I hardly ever share pics of this room, because it does not match my vision for my home. But, good news. It is about to get crazy in here.  A BIG FAT wall is about to come down. Floors are about to change. The kitchen and the dining room are about to become one room. I have always dreamed of one big farmhouse table, in a big farmhouse kitchen, where our family hangs out all the day long and the boys pick up the fiddle and play like Pa…

Demo of the 3 foot thick stone wall, the one that is in our way of this vision, begins in March 2016.

Want to see my room inspiration and a taste of what is to come? Check out my project kitchen posts, and my FHD kitchen reno Pinboard. It is just one dash farmhouse, and the rest is graphic gutsy decor. I’m going high on contrast, folks.

The Master Bedroom and Bath

I love this room.

When we were house-hunting, Fieldstone Hill was in sorry shape. A lot of ‘maldirected’ decor was being used to cover the fact that no one was taking care of the bones of this house.

The MINUTE I saw the floors on the 2nd and 3rd floors, my heart skipped a beat. Could it be pumpkin pine? But the floors were jet black from age. Still, I am a potential-hound, if not anything. I scratched away at a corner and was convinced I could bring the beauty out of the beast.

So, yes. The floors steal the show in here. And the 2 foot window wells are not too shabby either. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

The Boys’ Room

This is a very special room. Interestingly enough, it was created from my very first design board, EVAHHH! Check out the vintage link to the board… that is SO “2010.”

As my vision evolved, the room  – and the kids – only got cuter. Love those boys. They are the cutest ever-lovin’ rascals, and they LOVE sharing a room.

Enjoy the full reveal and room tour over here at this post. Sources too. And don’t miss the dutch door. It is my absolute favorite feature and for some reason, it never gets fussed over. Fuss over it a little, okay??

One last note: The custom verse art between the beds are made by my friend Jennifer, and they reflect the 3 songs that I sing to each one of our children every night. They are dear to me.

The Nursery

And baby girl makes three. Three kids, that is.

This is my favorite room in the house.

It is the first room that I designed, from design board to finish, where I did not have to compromise my choices. I put exactly what my designing-heart desired into this room (for me, that never equates high-end, but rather, a high low mix. I got spend-y where I wanted to get spend-y, and where it did not matter, I saved.).

I shared this room in last year’s Blogger Stylin Home Tour, and I also did a big reveal post with sources as well. Both posts have additional pictures and info.

The Guest Room, Bath, and Laundry

You know how it is with guest rooms. They are like the red-headed step children of the family. Our poor red-headed step-child is waiting for curtains, art, sconces, and a bedding update, but this room is the cutest little room in the house. Complete with a trap door that leads to our boys’ room. It joins with the downstairs bath and closes off to create a complete guest suite.

Thank you SO much for joining me on my house tour! I hope you enjoyed it and got some inspiration along the way, just in case you happen to be a fellow “Farmhouse Simplicity and High-Gloss Glamour” kinda gal.

Here is one final pic from the Attic level of our home.  Fieldstone Hill is pretty happy that an interior designer moved in, because imagine if no one loved on these floors…. Now, that would be sad.

Interview with Eddie Ross of Modern Mix
Monday, September 21, 2015 by {darlene}

Modern Mix!

 Interview with Eddie Ross , Modern Mix , via @Fieldstonehill

Here at Fieldstone Hill, I often describe my style as “farmhouse simplicity mixed with high-gloss glamour.” When I first heard the term “Modern Mix,” it confirmed why Eddie and I are friends! And, of course, as I started diving into Eddie’s Modern Mix book, I immediately resonated with the idea of tossing out rules and mixing up what you love.

I was fortunate to hang out with Eddie last week. I thought it would be fun interview him, since his book – a Must-Have in my eyes – really got my wheels turning.

An Interview with Eddie Ross, author of Modern Mix

Interview with Eddie Ross , Modern Mix via @Fieldstonehill

Darlene:  For decorating rule-followers, can you give them a “rule” that will help them break the rules and get them to start “Mixing!!”?

Eddie: Knowing the rules is a great first step in learning how to break them. If you focus on living with what you love – your personal rulebook will develop in no time. Just make sure you know the ones to never break. For example, you can use large furniture in a small room or paint a ceiling a fun color, but a correct place setting will always be vital!

Discover:

Darlene:  In your book, you use the word “discover” as a theme for seeing vintage things through new eyes. I LOVE this, because if we want to find treasures, we have to be able to see the potential in all objects! Discover Naturals. Discover Metals. etc. When you are out acquiring and discovering, do you ever take stock of what you “don’t like,” so that you can avoid it/make the most of your time, or are you open to every object?

Eddie:  Im definitely open to every object! Individual items can always be viewed in a new light. Personal taste changes as we change, so it is important to always discover new things – be it metals, patterns or colors.

Acquire:

Darlene:  Your book is FILLED with awesome flea market tips, guiding us how to “dig for treasure!” The tips are priceless, and are game-changers for people who think they cannot afford a designer home. I even love that you share what we need for our “survival bag,” as we face a day of thrifting.

Acquiring treasures can be so much fun, but for some it is intimidating. For those with an untrained eye, hitting their first flea market, what would you tell them to look for?

Eddie:  Try to look at the beauty – not the mess. Flea markets can be overwhelming because of the clutter and random pieces scattered about. Scan quickly, but look at everything. If you feel like you may have missed something, you can always go back for a second glance after the initial walk through. The more you go to flea markets, the more you will develop your eye. Soon, youll learn to scan quickly, access the value, and find out if you love it – or if you can love it once you polish it up!

Restore:

Darlene:  Your restoration tips are another invaluable part of your book! Eddie, I have seen you in action as you restore hidden treasures into new-again priceless beauties. For those hoping to achieve the Modern Mix, these tips alone make the book worth purchasing. This part of your book sparked a lot of ideas in my mind, and questions!

I imagine you have had a lot of restoration stories and even mistakes as you learned along the way. Can you share a restoration-fail story, to give those of us, who are not experts, the hope that we can do it if we keep on trying?

Eddie:  Like that time I soaked vintage linens in bleach and they completely disintegrated? We all have our moments with restoration. It will be frustrating at times, but there is always an opportunity to learn from the mistakes. The best part is that all of the memories of bad restoration will fade once you successfully restore a piece you love!

Curate:

Darlene:  Eddie, you encourage us to “look with fresh eyes at our belongings” to start curating our own personal library of accessories in our home. I know that you are a maximalist in your own style, enjoying layer upon layer as you fill your home with what you love. But those with keen style always know about ‘editing’ as well; removing what no longer works. Do you have a process for ‘editing’ your own belongings as you look at them with fresh eyes?

Eddie:  The maximalist approach to editing still requires editing. Theres a fine line between creating a mess and creating a modern mix. I try to develop an eye for seeing how each piece works with the others. Editing is not always about reducing, but often about refining the look in order to make the appearance more cohesive.

Entertain:

Darlene:  Your passion for entertaining is vivacious and contagious. Details abound and your serving choices are endless, as you have curated gorgeous pieces with intention throughout the years. In fact, we joked together once as I dubbed you with the hashtag #intentionalhoarder ! For those of us with bare cupboards regarding serving pieces, what 5 pieces should I score first to give me the best foundation for stylish entertaining?

Eddie: Those are some of the fun things found in the book! The Curate section really focuses on the key foundational pieces that will help you fake it like you’ve got an arsenal of serving ware in your butler’s pantry. Some essentials are punch bowls, cake pedestals, and of course decanters to help keep the wine flowing at a party!

The Modern Mix:

Darlene:  Eddie, your book is practical, inspirational, and even more commendable: Useful! I hope everyone who reads this will take a moment to snag a copy of Modern Mix for themselves. It is a book that is a Must-Have.

On this blog, I have a focus on helping people to overcome their decorating paralysis. Do you have any final words of encouragement for those who become paralyzed at flea-markets or Estate sales?

Eddie:  I hope my encouraging people to hunt out great pieces is not paralyzing, but you can always grab a boozy brunch before you start your hunt if it is too intimidating! Just remember that you are creating the space for you – not anyone else. You should always find joy in what you have in your home. It is helpful to have guidelines, but it is most important to follow your inner style. That is the whole fun!

Interview with Eddie Ross, Modern Mix, via @Fieldstonehill

* * * * *

Eddie’s book is essential for decorating lovers, style lovers, home curators, and flea market lovers. I love that Modern Mix is at home on the coffee table, but is also a field guide to successfully navigating flea markets. Before any flea market adventure (I LOVE the hunt!), I am going to soak in the pages to get my hunt off on the right foot.

Follow Eddie on Instagram @eddieross , and check out his blog, Eddie Ross.

Master Designer Photo Series: Lime Butterfly

Master Designer Photo Series:

Lime Butterfly

* * *

One of my favorite topics: chatting about the GLORIOUS beauty and STYLE of Creation, and how we were meant to be creators and designers as well: The dance between fine design and the creations of God himself.

This image, meant to spark the imagination and inspire your design dreams, is a part of my Master Designer photo series. The series is a collection of simple photo reflections, as well as inspiring quotes, on

THE AUDACIOUS CREATIONS OF GOD SIDE-BY-SIDE THE AUDACIOUS CREATIONS OF MAN, GOD’S MASTERPIECE. #MASTERDESIGNER

My cry:

That bold design comes from our Creator, and we can find confidence in boldly being ourselves, because nothing is more bold or audacious than He.

My dream, as I curate these photos:

To eventually create a gorgeous coffee table book called “Master Designer.” Hopefully, it will sit on your coffee table someday. It will be filled with gorgeous images showing God’s creations, and side-by-side, Man’s creations. It will also have a few inspiring quotes and thoughts of my own.

I’ve been up to….
Monday, September 14, 2015 by {darlene}

Lately, my days are beautiful. Sometimes even blog-worthy. All have been family-filled. Even so, I have been quiet here on the blog, and missing you all.

Life has been moving at a wild pace, with my boys getting bigger, homeschool getting more demanding – especially with a cute two year old in tow. But I am right where I want and need to be. For that, I am so thankful. I hope you will connect with me on Instagram @fieldstonehill. It is such a good and speedy way for this momma to share inspiration, style, design, travel goodies, and a pic or two of my darling family with you!

And I am still Pinning wildly as ever. Thank you to all my 36k Pinterest followers ( Apparently, I am not alone in my addiction!!!)  who also adore gorgeous design, wellness, clean eating, and living with beauty in all areas of life.

Stay posted here for some awesome things this Fall:

What’s new here at Fieldstone Hill Design? Well, slowly but surely I am working on a new blog design with my talented friend Heather. I am so excited. It is going to be fresh and magazine styled. I know you will love it!

This Wednesday, I am thrilled to head out to New York City for the Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker event! Follow us on social media using the hashtag #bhgstyle. Have you read the September BHG Stylemaker issue yet? It is chock full of goodness. I am sure to return with fresh inspiration. I am especially excited to see my fun, kind-hearted and talented friend Eddie Ross. {Do you have his book yet?? AMAZE-BALLS!}. Can’t wait! I will be updating my Instagram regularly from NYC.

Also, slowly but surely, I am working with a favorite (and extremely patient) client on a bathroom/workroom space.  I still have requests pouring in for design boards, but for the time being, I have had to take a little break from new design boards. I look forward to when I can jump back in… but for now, I have had to choose between picking out sofas for new clients or keeping up with my own household with devoted attention. This season is brief – that I have already figured out. Some of my talent outlets will have to wait.

I am still diligently working on our kitchen, but since our contractor got a bit delayed, I pushed him out to March so that I would not have to go kitchen-less in the middle of our homeschool season. I would lose my ever-loving mind. So… March is when walls should start coming down. Starting with a 3 foot thick, load-bearing stone wall from the 1820’s. EEK! Can you say DUST!! So no current renovation pics this fall, but I will keep you posted as I continue to choose things for the kitchen. You can see more in my posts and on my Kitchen Inspiration Pinterest board.

My blog sponsor is still my Young Living {thank you for checking it out!}. I hope you will give these ‘crazy oils’ a fair shake, and not just bc they support this here Style and Interiors blog. They are so well loved that I no longer have to worry about blog sponsorship, and can take less and less sponsored posts (sharing only the ones I REALLY want to share). I am thankful for that, but most of all, I still just love my oils. My friend Edie wrote an EXCELLENT post {Essential Oils and 3 Reasons Why I’m still Head over Heels} about her mutual love for these babies, and I couldn’t agree more.

But, really, most of what I have been up to has been….

Mothering.

Caring for my precious 3, for my precious few years. I am in-deep with this mothering biz: ignoring potentially amazing professional pursuits, and not apologizing for it, or pretending I can do it all.

Thank you for loving me anyway. I knew I liked you. xoxoxo
